Job summary

Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology in Ottawa is seeking a Cybersecurity Intern to assist in Operations and IAM implementation activities. This 8‑month internship offers 24 hours per week with a hybrid work option, starting August 17, 2026.

The student will collaborate with the Information Security & Privacy Team and ITS staff to gain practical experience in security operations. The role requires current full‑time student status, eligibility for CSEP, and meeting OSAP/financial aid

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a full‑time program at Algonquin College as a domestic fee‑paying student.
  • Eligible for the College Student Employment Program (CSEP) and must meet the financial need requirement (OSAP or out‑of‑province financial aid).
  • Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, or Protected Person/Convention Refugee under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

Responsibilities

  • Review and perform security assessment requests, escalating to a Senior Cyber Security Strategist.
  • Review applicable standards and requirements including IAM Standard, PCI DSS, and the Information Security Incident Management Process.
  • Review college security and privacy policies, applicable standards, procedures, and practices.
  • Assist in preparing Security Education and Awareness Training (SAT) resources under the guidance of a Senior Cyber Security Strategist.
  • Research and identify initial security operations gaps and requirements for the implementation of E&Y Audit controls.
  • Test, review, and make recommendations on recently implemented email encryption and DLP governance, policies, and practices, including security response and Service Desk procedures, DLP fine‑tuning, alerts handling, training needs, and college communications.
  • Research and prepare PowerPoint presentations as required.
  • Undertake other related research and writing activities as assigned by a Senior Cyber Security Strategist or the Associate Director, Information Security & Privacy.

Job description

Cybersecurity Intern

The Information Security & Privacy Team requires the services of a Cybersecurity Intern to assist in Cybersecurity Operations and IAM Implementation Activities. The student will work collaboratively with the team and other ITS staff. The position is a student internship with a contract length of 8 months, scheduled weekly hours of 24, and a salary range of $17.60 to $27.00 per hour. The anticipated start date is August 17, 2026.

  • Up to six months of practical experience in relevant areas.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to apply fundamental reading, writing, and arithmetic skills.
  • Eligible under all program policies (excluding partnership programs with the University of Ottawa or Carleton University).

Additional details on work dates and scheduling: Monday to Thursday, 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM. The position is eligible for hybrid work in accordance with the College's Flexible Work Arrangement Policy.
