To provide advice, lead, coordinate, and support a comprehensive Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) program for the respective Long-Term Care Home, ensuring compliance and implementation of clinical and non-clinical care standards and best practices in accordance with relevant acts and legislations. Collaborate with others to identify and mitigate risk factors, aiming to improve resident outcomes and prevent disease outbreaks.
Major Responsibilities:
- Implement detailed plans and recommend policies/procedures regarding program-specific requirements.
- Conduct research into assigned areas, consulting with the divisional Infection Prevention & Control (IPAC) Committee, ensuring research considers developments within the field, corporate policies, legislation, and government initiatives. Research best practices for infection prevention and control.
- Manage the assigned infection control budget, ensuring expenditures are within approved limits.
- Lead, plan, implement, and track the delivery of IPAC training and education to staff, caregivers, volunteers, visitors, and residents; maintain relevant records. Contribute to employee performance reviews.
- Implement the IPAC program in accordance with relevant acts and legislations, meeting requirements outlined by authorities such as the Ministry of Long-Term Care and Accreditation Canada.
- Audit IPAC practices, including hand hygiene and PPE procedures, to prevent disease outbreaks.
- Conduct monthly infectious disease surveillance, review results, and ensure staff conduct surveillance appropriately. Monitor staff performance and recommend disciplinary actions when necessary.
- Lead outbreak management efforts to minimize risks to residents and staff.
- Coordinate and convene the interdisciplinary IPAC Team regularly and during outbreaks, engaging with Toronto Public Health as needed.
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals and other departments to implement, monitor, and evaluate the IPAC program.
- Secure resources for outbreak management, participate in purchasing PPE, and document IPAC activities.
- Review screening results daily and monthly, implementing improvements based on audit findings.
- Lead quality improvement processes related to infection prevention and control, monitoring risk management data.
- Ensure the hand hygiene program complies with provincial standards.
- Coordinate respirator fit testing and maintain related records.
- Administer the vaccination program, including ordering, storage, reporting, and coordinating annual immunizations for staff, residents, and volunteers. Maintain vaccination records.
- Support volunteer vaccination efforts and record-keeping.
- Manage the pandemic plan, ensuring it aligns with divisional strategies, involving stakeholders in review and updates, and maintaining PPE supplies.
- Coordinate with public health units, Infection Control Networks, and hospital partners, maintaining communication to improve infection control programs.
- Manage IPAC-related clinical software systems, troubleshoot issues, and evaluate technology.
- Represent the Home in professional networks to stay updated on best practices and trends.
- Participate in relevant committees, such as the Joint Health and Safety Committee and the divisional IPAC committee.
Key Qualifications:
- A degree in a health-related discipline (e.g., nursing, laboratory, epidemiology) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Current registration and good standing with a regulatory healthcare body in Ontario.
- Certification in infection control from the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CIC) or equivalent.
- Extensive experience in infection prevention & control, preferably in Long-Term Care, Acute, or Complex Continuing Care sectors.
- Knowledge of long-term care home operations.
- Experience leading infection-related incident investigations.
- Experience supervising in a unionized environment.
