Role Description : To provide advice, lead, coordinate and support a comprehensive Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) program for the respective Long-Term Care Home, ensuring compliance and implementation of clinical and non-clinical care standards and best practices in accordance with relevant acts and legislations. Collaborate with others to identify and mitigate risk factors to promote resident outcomes and prevent disease outbreaks.

Major Responsibilities :

  • Implement detailed plans and recommend policies / procedures regarding program-specific requirements.
  • Conduct research into assigned areas, ensuring practices align with developments within the field, policies, legislation, and best practices.
  • Manage the infection control budget within approved limits.
  • Lead, plan, implement, and track IPAC training and education for staff, caregivers, volunteers, visitors, and residents; maintain records and participate in performance reviews.
  • Ensure IPAC practices comply with relevant legislation and standards, including outbreak management.
  • Audit IPAC practices, including hand hygiene and PPE use.
  • Conduct infectious disease surveillance, review results, and ensure appropriate actions are taken.
  • Lead outbreak management and coordinate the IPAC team during outbreaks, engaging with Toronto Public Health as needed.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to implement and evaluate the IPAC program.
  • Secure resources for outbreak management and participate in procurement of PPE.
  • Document, track, and report IPAC activities and data.
  • Review screening results and implement improvements based on audits.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives related to infection prevention and control.
  • Oversee hand hygiene and respirator fit testing programs.
  • Administer vaccination programs for staff, residents, and volunteers, including record-keeping and reporting.
  • Manage pandemic plans, ensuring updates, training, and supplies are maintained.
  • Coordinate with public health and other partners for IPAC activities.
  • Manage IPAC-related software systems and troubleshoot issues.
  • Represent the Home in professional networks and participate in safety and quality committees.

Key Qualifications :

  • A degree in a health-related discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Registration with a regulatory healthcare body in Ontario.
  • Certification in infection control (LTC-CIP or CIC).
  • Experience in infection prevention & control, particularly in long-term care or related sectors.
  • Knowledge of long-term care operations.
  • Experience leading incident investigations related to IPAC.
  • Supervisory experience in a unionized environment.
