Job summary

Cambridge Memorial Hospital seeks a full-time Infection Control Practitioner to support infection prevention across inpatient and outpatient services. Job Description

Salary Range: $49.93 - $59.44

Cambridge Memorial Hospital (CMH) is seeking a full-time permanent Infection Control Practitioner (ICP) to support infection prevention and control across our inpatient and outpatient acute care setting. Reporting to the Director Patient Experience, Quality, Risk, Privacy & IPAC; Chief Privacy Officer, this role provides surveillance, consultation, outbreak management support, education, quality improvement, and IPAC guidance for clinical and construction-related activities. This role is an on-site position located within an acute care hospital environment. Schedule includes day shift, with weekend and on-call (by phone) rotations; shifts may be subject to change.

Key Accountabilities
  • Monitor patients for infections, epidemiologically important organisms, sentinel events, environmental risks and communicable diseases.
  • Coordinate surveillance, exposure investigation, outbreak management support and communicable disease reporting.
  • Support development and regular review of IPAC policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, quality improvement initiatives and infection control statistics.
  • Provide education, consultation and recommendations to patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and internal/external stakeholders.
  • Advise on equipment, supplies, product evaluations, construction projects and hospital committees as required.
  • Provide IPAC consultation for construction, renovation and maintenance activities.
  • As required, review hoarding plans, conduct inspections and support Preventative Measures Analysis
  • Provide visible IPAC support in patient care areas and consultation to clinical staff and physicians.
  • Participate in Nursing Advisory Committee, Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee, Emergency Preparedness Committee, and Sharps Reprocessing Committee
  • Collect data, analyse, and educate on best practices in hand hygiene across the organization

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree in a health-related discipline, such as nursing, laboratory sciences, epidemiology or other allied health discipline is required.
  • Current registration as a regulated health care professional with the appropriate professional body is preferred
  • Minimum three years of current experience as an Infection Control Professional is required; acute care setting is preferred.
  • Certificate in Infection Control (CIC designation) from the Certification Board of Infection Control or demonstrated steps towards obtaining, is required.
  • Successful completion of an IPAC Canada-endorsed basic training course in Infection Prevention and Control or equivalent is required.
  • Previous experience with construction-related infection control in health care including understanding of CSA Z8000 and CSA Z317 is an asset.
  • Experience with adult education concepts and principles, including facilitation is required
  • Experience with project management is considered an asset.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare reports, provide feedback and communicate recommendations clearly is required.
  • Strong teaching, coaching and facilitation skills are required.
  • High proficiency with electronic health record systems (Cerner-Oracle, HealthConnex) and Microsoft based programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) are required.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment is required.
  • Self-motivated, flexible and able to work effectively with minimal supervision is required.
  • Commitment to uphold all privacy standards is required.
  • Effective organizational, interpersonal and client service skills is required.
  • Excellent customer service and time management skills required.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with various stakeholders (managers, charge nurses, front line staff, physicians) is required.
  • Ability to attend work on a regular basis and fulfill scheduled responsibilities is required.
