Job summary

Teknion is seeking an Industrial Designer to lead product design solutions for seating, guiding the Junior Industrial Designer and coordinating with a multi-disciplinary team throughout the stage-gate development process.

You will contribute to design briefs, ensure portfolio fit and design language, manage documentation, CAD models, renderings and development prototypes, and communicate status across stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Guide the Junior Industrial Designer to ensure product design intent, integrity and quality of execution.
• Manage design activities, documentation, communications and deliverables within the stage-gate development process.
• Contribute to the definition and execution of seating product design solutions and ensure portfolio fit and design language.
• Provide guidance to internal and external design resources to meet program and design requirements.
• Ensure accurate and timely communication of status between stakeholders in the multidisciplinary team and design management.
• Represent the Seating design department in Teknion client interactions and support the design management process.
• Communicate product design through sketches, renderings, prototypes, CAD models and presentations.

Job description

The Industrial Designer is responsible for providing product design solutions, while also providing limited guidance to the Junior Industrial Designer. They are responsible for managing the design activities, documentation, communications and deliverables related to the stage gate development process within a multi-disciplinary team environment.

LEADERSHIP

Product Design Integrity

• Provide design guidance to the Junior Industrial Designer to ensure product design intent, integrity and quality of execution as well as knowledge transfer throughout the development process.

Multi-disciplinary Development Team activities

• Manage the development, deliverables, and communications activities between the (multi-disciplinary) project team members related to the industrial design activities to meet project objectives.

Product Definition and execution

• Contribute to the definition (design brief) and execution (often including outside collaboration) of the product design solution for new seating products, and to ensure its portfolio fit, design language, and performance requirements and meeting all design brief requirements.
  People
• Contribute to the advancement of professional practice of the industrial design specific to the evolving Seating development activities.
• Provide guidance to internal and outside design consulting resources to ensure both the program requirements (deliverables, schedule, etc) and the design requirements (portfolio fit, aesthetics, comfort and performance etc) are met.

COMMUNICATIONS

Development team and Design Management

• Ensure accurate and timely communication of all status and content issues between relevant stake holders in multi-disciplinary development team and design management.

Client and Sales assist interface

• Act as a representative of the Seating design department as part of the Teknion client experience .

Documentation

• Communicate and demonstrate all aspects of the product design through a series of different media appropriate to the stages of development including: sketches, renderings, development prototype models, CAD models, and slide development documentation and presentations.

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Product Definition

• Generate and document new product concepts and design language guidelines in response to Market and Design research activities of the evolving needs of the workplace that ultimately support the creation of the Design Brief or PDO.
• Contribute directly to the Design Research activities through field observation, client interaction, Design Discovery Sprints, design insights activities.

Development

• To provide insight and decisions on all design related issues in the cross disciplinary development discussions to collectively solve new product issues including manufacturability, function, appearance, product application, CMF, product offering, testing, etc.
• To function with limited supervision in executing the assigned projects, including decision making, working with outside consultants, design engineering and Product Management.
• To develop new products through a systematic process of stage gate activities and deliverables according to a predetermined launch schedule.

The expected base salary range for this position will be start at $74,410.00. Final base salary offers will reflect an assessment of the selected candidate's skills, demonstrated competencies, and adherence to our internal pay equity framework.
