Job description

Ready to see your ideas come to life on store shelves across Canada? We're looking for an experienced hands‑on, creative industrial designer to join our product development team in Toronto. From sketch to shelf, you’ll take the lead on designing innovative outdoor products – everything from soft goods to powered equipment.

This role is perfect for someone who’s energized by variety, thrives on problem‑solving, and takes pride in turning ideas into tangible, real‑world products.

If you're resourceful, detail‑driven, and passionate about creating great products that people will use every day, we want to hear from you!

Summary Role

This role will work on all phases of the product development process from start to finish, resulting in your designs being mass produced and sold in large retail stores – many stores that you recognize! The focus of this role is to ideate and customize products including mechanical and powered equipment for people to use outdoors.

As a member of the design team, you'll join a tight‑knit group of industrial, mechanical, and graphic designers who manage the creation of new products from conception to completion.

Responsibilities

In a typical week you will:

  • Ideate and design products - take products from initial concept through to manufacturing launch.
  • Conduct market research to develop a deep understanding of product categories.
  • Source the best products currently being made in overseas markets, test them and improve them to develop unbeatable products for our market.
  • Communicate with manufacturers across the world, to create and improve products.
  • Travel occasionally internationally for manufacturer visits and tradeshows.
  • Support the graphic design team for packaging and marketing needs.
  • Maintain detailed information and documentation of new products.
  • Collaborate with all departments to support the product development cycle through to production.
Who we’re looking for
  • Detail oriented – sweats the small stuff
  • Problem solver – finds solutions, makes recommendations and improvements
  • Goal oriented – able to work on various projects and deliver quality results
  • Continuous learner – eager to gain knowledge and reach further to learn about Midland’s products
  • Decisive – makes sound decisions balancing factors and reaching the best solution and not the easiest.
  • Hard‑goods knowledge – has a mechanical inclination and knowledge of how things function, primarily with hard‑goods and power equipment.
Experience
  • University degree in Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineer, or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years of working experience as product designer or developer
  • Familiar with construction, tools, electronics, gas/solar powered equipment, consumer hard goods
