Job summary

Acuity Brands is seeking an Industrial Designer to contribute to the design and development of distinctive architectural lighting products from concept through production. You will transform complex needs into elegant, manufacturable solutions aligned with our design standards.

Collaborating with engineering, manufacturing, sourcing, and marketing, you will own projects, respond to feedback, and drive ideas from exploration to execution in a fast-paced team environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design or a related field.
  • Experience in product design and development within a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with lighting, architectural products, or technology-driven products is an asset.
  • A portfolio demonstrating design thinking, process, technical development, and execution.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Design Engineering, the Industrial Designer contributes to the design and development of distinctive architectural lighting products from early concept through production. The successful candidate combines creativity, attention to detail, and technical rigor to transform complex needs into elegant, manufacturable solutions aligned with Eureka's design standards.

The Industrial Designer works as part of a team with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. The successful candidate takes ownership of assigned projects, communicates clearly, responds constructively to feedback, and helps move ideas efficiently from exploration to execution.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
Product Design and Development
  • Design architectural luminaires from initial sketch and concept development through production launch.
  • Create concepts, feasibility studies, design presentations, and clear visual narratives.
  • Develop thoughtful solutions that balance user needs, design intent, business objectives, cost, and manufacturability.
  • Participate actively in design reviews and integrate feedback with sound judgment.
Design Documentation
  • Create accurate 3D CAD models and detailed technical drawings.
  • Prepare manufacturing, assembly, and installation drawings.
  • Create and maintain bills of materials (BOMs) and product documentation in the appropriate systems.
  • Ensure design information is complete, accurate, and ready for downstream teams.
Prototyping and Validation
  • Build or coordinate prototypes and mockups to evaluate form, function, assembly, and user experience.
  • Plan and support product testing and design validation with the appropriate stakeholders.
  • Identify and resolve design, manufacturing, assembly, and production issues.
Stakeholder Collaboration
  • Work as part of a team with engineering, manufacturing, sourcing, marketing, sales, suppliers, and other partners throughout the development process.
  • Communicate design intent, trade-offs, risks, and decisions clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Complete required follow-ups and contribute actively to resolving open issues.
  • Contribute to the evolution of design tools, standards, templates, and best practices.
  • Share knowledge and support a collaborative, accountable, and learning-focused team culture.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve product quality, team efficiency, and ways of working.
Skills and Minimum Experience Required
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design or a related field.
  • Experience in product design and development within a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with lighting, architectural products, or technology-driven products is considered an asset.
  • A portfolio demonstrating strong design thinking, process, technical development, and execution is required.
Technical Skills
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, or an equivalent platform.
  • Good understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, tolerances, assemblies, and production constraints.
  • Experience creating technical drawings, prototypes, and production documentation.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, KeyShot, or comparable visualization and presentation tools.
  • Ability to work in both French and English is considered an asset.
