Job summary

Canucks Autism Network (CAN) is seeking enthusiastic Swim Coaches to lead program sessions across Nanaimo. You will deliver CAN curriculum, foster a positive and inclusive learning environment, and support volunteers and support workers under Onsite Supervisors.

In-house training, ongoing mentorship, and small class sizes are provided. Requirements include 16+, 1 year coaching or group activity experience, Standard First Aid and CPR-C, clear references, and ability to skate.

Qualifications

• Must be 16 years of age or older.
• Minimum 1 year experience coaching children/youth sport or leading group activities in a recreational setting.
• Valid Standard First Aid and CPR-C Certification
• Able to provide appropriate references and a clear criminal record check
• Must be able to skate forwards and backwards (Skate programs only)

Responsibilities

• Create and deliver organized lesson plans aligning with curriculum and participant needs.
• Use autism-informed coaching methods and adapt activities for different abilities, communication styles, and sensory needs.
• Create a positive, supportive, and enjoyable learning environment.
• Collaborate with Onsite Supervisor to ensure successful participant-staff matches.
• Ensure sessions start and end on time, including setup and cleanup.
• Provide clear instructions and support to Support Workers and Volunteers during activities.
• Meet participant needs and ensure programs run successfully with staff.
• Share lesson plans and expectations with staff ahead of time.
• Model professionalism, teamwork, and respectful communication with participants, families, and coworkers.
• Arrive prepared with equipment, materials, and activity plans.
• Transport and return equipment on time.
• Demonstrate time management, organization, and attention to detail.
• Follow program procedures, safety guidelines, and organizational expectations.
• Adapt to changes in programming or participant needs.
• Maintain a professional and dependable approach throughout sessions.
• Engage in self-reflection and open communication with supervisors to support wellbeing.
