Job summary

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a Facility and Measurement Engineer, In Situ Conformance, to join a multidisciplinary team supporting review of measurement plans for oil sands facilities.

Based in Calgary or Edmonton, this full-time limited-term role (12 months) offers a competitive CAD 102,000–120,000 salary and a pathway to regulatory impact through risk-informed technical assessments and collaboration with industry and government partners.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Petroleum, Mechanical, or Environmental Engineering; professional registration preferred.
  • 5–7 years of process, facility, or regulatory engineering experience in the energy sector.
  • Professional registration with APEGA or ASET preferred; certification in measurement or MARP is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of Alberta’s regulatory framework (EPEA, OSCA) and related directives.
  • Experience with measurement systems, metering devices, and facility schematics.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication with internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Review, coordinate, and apply risk-informed technical review principles to in situ applications, reports, and submissions.
  • Provide technical expertise in measurement systems, MARPs, and related data to evaluate compliance.
  • Conduct desktop surveillance, audits, and assurance across the project lifecycle.
  • Contribute to sector initiatives and integrate measurement considerations into regulatory frameworks and tools.
  • Collaborate with industry, government, and multidisciplinary teams to communicate findings and guidance.
