Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking an experienced civil engineer to lead hydrotechnical design for mining projects in the Vancouver area. You will work on water balance modelling, open channel flow analysis, erosion protection design, and tailings facility considerations.

The role requires 3+ years of relevant experience, P.Eng eligibility in Canada, and strong reporting and client communication skills. You will collaborate with mine site teams to drive risk-informed decisions and climate-resilient designs.

Qualifications

• A degree in civil engineering.
• 3+ years’ civil design experience related to surface water controls (preferably for mining or related industries).
• Eligible to register as professional engineer in Canada.
• Experience in hydrotechnical design analyses (e.g., water balance, open channel flow, erosion protection).
• General understanding of mining-related regulations and industry best practices.
• Passion for collaborating with clients and colleagues.
• Enhanced communication skills, including experience in writing technical reports and project correspondence.
• Experience in a safety focused environment with near miss and incident reporting requirements.

Responsibilities

• Lead hydrotechnical design and analysis for mining projects, focusing on water balance and surface water controls.
• Engage with clients, colleagues and suppliers to deliver field programs and design solutions.
• Mentor less experienced staff through design methodologies and ensure quality of deliverables.
• Build client rapport as projects progress from feasibility through to mine closure, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.
• Support risk assessments, Dam Safety Reviews and risk-informed decision making.

Job description

• Work with the latest versions of software, including GoldSim, PCSWMM, HEC-RAS, HEC- HMS, Flow-2D/3D
• Work on mine site wide water balance and water quality models
• Design hydrotechnical components tailings storage facilities for global mining projects
• Incorporate climate change resiliency in hydrotechnical design
• Contribute to risk assessments, Dam Safety Reviews and risk-informed decision making
• Engage with clients, colleagues and suppliers on environmentally focused field programs and design solutions
• Lead less experienced staff through design methodologies
• Build client rapport as projects progress from feasibility through to mine closure
