Job description

HYDROTECHNICAL ENGINEER-IN-TRAINING (EIT)

Rivers, floods, dams, and mine water management, with real mentorship toward your P.Eng.

Location: Vancouver, BC

About the role

PRI is looking for a Hydrotechnical EIT to join our Hydrotechnical practice. You will work on rivers, floods, and dams: hydrologic and hydraulic modelling, flood hazard assessment, dam safety, and mine water management, under the direct mentorship of senior Professional Engineers.

Dams and mining are a significant part of what we do. We complete Dam Safety Reviews and inspections for water retention dams and tailings storage facilities, and support mine water management at operating and closed sites. It is high-consequence work with clear standards behind it, which makes it an excellent place to develop rigour early.

What you'll do
  • Compile and analyze hydrometric and climate data, and carry out flood frequency and design flow analyses.
  • Build and run hydrologic and hydraulic models under senior direction, including one-dimensional and two-dimensional river models.
  • Support Dam Safety Reviews and dam safety inspections, inflow design flood analysis, dam breach and inundation mapping, and spillway and outlet works hydraulics.
  • Support mine water management, including site-wide water balance, diversions, and hydrology for tailings facilities and water management ponds.
  • Contribute to floodplain mapping, flood hazard assessment, river engineering, erosion protection, and drainage and stormwater design.
  • Carry out field work including stream and cross-section surveys, hydrometric monitoring, culvert inventories, dam safety inspections, and mine site visits.
  • Prepare draft memos, calculations, figures, and mapping for senior review, and build your competencies toward EGBC P.Eng. registration.
What you bring
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil, Water Resources, or Environmental Engineering with a hydrotechnical, hydrology, or hydraulics focus.
  • Registered as an EIT with EGBC, or eligible for immediate registration.
  • Solid grounding in open channel hydraulics, hydrology, and fluid mechanics.
  • Familiarity with modelling software such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SRH-2D, MIKE, or PCSWMM, and with GIS tools; comfort with data and basic scripting is an asset.
  • Genuine interest in dam safety and the mining sector, and willingness to build expertise in both.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills, and real care for accuracy.
  • Class 5 BC driver's license, and willingness to work outdoors, wade in streams, and travel to project and mine sites, including remote, fly-in, or camp-based work.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.
