Job summary

Jacobs in Canada is seeking a senior electrical engineer to lead HV/EHV cable design projects, from concept through detailed design, estimation and site support.

You will apply CYMCAP and industry standards (IEC, IEEE, CIGRE), collaborate with global OEMs, and travel within North America as required.

This role emphasizes collaboration and a hybrid work model, balancing office and project sites to deliver safe, reliable power solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil, Mechanical or related engineering discipline; Master’s degree preferred.
• Minimum 8 years of direct experience with underground and/or subsea cable design and installation.
• Ability to work with cable design software such as CYMCAP.
• Knowledge of IEC, IEEE and CIGRE standards.
• Experience working with major global cable OEMs.
• Willingness to travel within North America.

Responsibilities

• Develop HV/EHV cabling systems specifications, concept/detailed design and design review, estimation, site supervision and support.
• Provide technical support to the team on HV cable system engineering and design.
• Prepare specifications, power cable route specifications, and reports and progress reports.
• Coordinate interfaces with other engineering functions involved in projects.
• Attend and conduct meetings with colleagues, clients, and subcontractors.
• Support factory inspections (FAT).
• Perform technical calculations including cable size, rating calculations, EMF and thermomechanical analyses.
• Perform design reviews and verification of design.
• Ensure drawings and specs contain sufficient, accurate information for construction; request missing information promptly.
• Verify inspection and test plans per specifications, including dimension accuracy and quality.
• Embrace collaboration with a hybrid working policy to deliver client projects.

Duties for this position include but are not limited to

• Develop HV/EHV cabling systems specifications, concept/detailed design and design review, estimation, site supervision and support as required.
• Provide technical support to the team on all aspects of HV cable system engineering and design.
• Prepare specifications power cable route specifications, and reports and progress reports
• Confirm correct and accurate interface with other engineering functions involved in the projects,
• Attend and conduct internal and external meetings with colleagues, clients, and subcontractors
• Support factory inspections Test (FAT).
• Perform technical calculations including cable size, rating calculations, electromechanical and thermomechanical forces and EMF calculations, heath induced voltage calculations
• Perform design reviews, and verification of design.
• Confirm that the drawings and specification documents contain sufficient, accurate information for construction of the works. Formally request any missing information in sufficient time to allow the program to proceed without delay
• Confirm that inspection and test plans are completed as required by the specifications, including a check of dimension accuracy and quality

Here’s what you'll need

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil, Mechanical or related engineering discipline, from a recognized institution. Master’s degree is preferred.
• Minimum 8 years of direct experience with underground and/or subsea cable design and installation.
• Ability to work with cable design software such as CYMCAP.
• Knowledge of applicable industry standards such as IEC, IEEE and CIGRE.
• Experience working with major global cable OEMs.
• Ability and willingness to travel within North America.

Ideally, You’ll Also Have

• Experience with HVDC and subsea cable technologies
• Professional Engineer (PE or PEng) License or ability to obtain within 6 months
• Active/ongoing involvement in power cable related working groups and standards committees such as ICC or CIGRE
