Job summary

Jacobs in Canada is seeking an experienced electrical/civil/mechanical engineer to lead HV/EHV cable design and related disciplines on transmission projects. This role focuses on specifications, design reviews, and cross‑functional collaboration with clients and OEMs.

The position requires 8+ years of direct experience, proficiency with CYMCAP, and willingness to travel across North America. A hybrid work model is offered to balance office and field responsibilities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil, Mechanical or related engineering discipline.
• Minimum 8 years of direct experience with underground and/or subsea cable design and installation.
• Ability to work with cable design software such as CYMCAP.
• Knowledge of applicable industry standards such as IEC, IEEE and CIGRE.
• Experience working with major global cable OEMs.
• Ability and willingness to travel within North America.

Responsibilities

• Develop HV/EHV cabling systems specifications, concept/detailed design and design review, estimation, site supervision and support as required.
• Provide technical support to the team on all aspects of HV cable system engineering and design.
• Prepare specifications, power cable route specifications, and reports and progress reports.
• Confirm correct interfaces with other engineering functions involved in the projects.
• Attend and conduct internal and external meetings with colleagues, clients, and subcontractors.
• Support factory inspections and FAT.
• Perform technical calculations including cable size, rating, EMF and thermo-mechanical analyses.
• Perform design reviews and verification of design.
• Ensure drawings and specs contain sufficient information for construction and request missing data on time.
• Verify inspection and test plans are completed per specs.

Duties for this position include but are not limited to

• Develop HV/EHV cabling systems specifications, concept/detailed design and design review, estimation, site supervision and support as required.
• Provide technical support to the team on all aspects of HV cable system engineering and design.
• Prepare specifications power cable route specifications, and reports and progress reports
• Confirm correct and accurate interface with other engineering functions involved in the projects,
• Attend and conduct internal and external meetings with colleagues, clients, and subcontractors
• Support factory inspections Test (FAT).
• Perform technical calculations including cable size, rating calculations, electromechanical and thermomechanical forces and EMF calculations, heath induced voltage calculations
• Perform design reviews, and verification of design.
• Confirm that the drawings and specification documents contain sufficient, accurate information for construction of the works. Formally request any missing information in sufficient time to allow the program to proceed without delay
• Confirm that inspection and test plans are completed as required by the specifications, including a check of dimension accuracy and quality

Here’s what you'll need

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil, Mechanical or related engineering discipline, from a recognized institution. Master’s degree is preferred.
• Minimum 8 years of direct experience with underground and/or subsea cable design and installation.
• Ability to work with cable design software such as CYMCAP.
• Knowledge of applicable industry standards such as IEC, IEEE and CIGRE.
• Experience working with major global cable OEMs.
• Ability and willingness to travel within North America.

Ideally, You’ll Also Have

• Experience with HVDC and subsea cable technologies
• Professional Engineer (PE or PEng) License or ability to obtain within 6 months
• Active/ongoing involvement in power cable related working groups and standards committees such as ICC or CIGRE
