Job summary

Seapeak is seeking an experienced HR Generalist to lead day-to-day HR in our Vancouver head office, including payroll, policy development, employee relations and local compliance for a professional, global workforce in the maritime sector.

You will partner with global HR colleagues in Glasgow, Bahrain, Manila and Vancouver to deliver programs, systems and leadership development, while mentoring the Vancouver office team and supporting business growth and culture.

Qualifications

  • University Degree or Diploma in Human Resources.
  • Minimum 5 years HR generalist experience with payroll exposure.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience with ATS and HCM systems is preferred.

Position Summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and experienced HR professional looking to join a growing and global organization within the maritime sector. This role is based in the head office in Vancouver which largely consists of corporate focused roles i.e. finance, accounting, legal, tax, insurance, business development and IT.

The successful candidate will be responsible for all day-to-day human resource matters (including payroll) for the Vancouver office and for the delivery of programs and services to local line management and employees.

This is a generalist HR position with real opportunity to contribute to global programs, initiatives, systems and alignment in all areas of HR. The successful candidate will be supporting a very professional workforce and will contribute towards the HR strategy of the business whether it be on matters such as HRIS, compensation and benefits or learning and development.

The global HR team consists of resources in Glasgow, Bahrain, Manila and Vancouver and the successful candidate will regularly collaborate with colleagues in each of these regions. You will lead the Vancouver HR and office team, with the HR & Office Coordinator and Office Services Assistant reporting into this position.

Major Responsibilities
Employee Relations
  • Serves as the primary HR advisor for all Vancouver based employees on HR matters; provides timely, confidential support and practical problem-solving.
  • Manages employee relation issues including complex cases (performance improvement plans, disciplinary matters, separations), coaching managers on resolution and documentation.
  • Proactively manages performance concerns and advises managers on coaching and development strategies to support employee growth.
  • Ensures compliance with federal regulations, corporate policies and processes; stays current on employment law changes (e.g., BC Employment Standards Act)
  • Coaches managers on the full life-cycle management strategies from recruitment, learning and development, succession planning to offboarding.
  • Develops, maintains and consistently applies all local HR documentation including policies, templates and job descriptions.
  • Maintenance of personnel files and ensuring all required documentation is on file.
Recruitment and Onboarding:
  • Leads local recruitment strategy to attract and retain talent; manages all recruitment activities including advertising, candidate screening, interviews, assessments, offers and pre-employment checks in line with global templates.
  • Coaches hiring managers on candidate selection best practices and organizational fit assessment.
  • Proactively manages vendor relationships and recruitment costs; consistently delivers satisfactory recruitment lead times
  • Proactively keeps recruitment costs to a minimum and looks to promote internal talent, wherever possible.
  • Conducts new hire onboarding sessions to ensuring Seapeak standards are adhered to.
  • Ensures training requirements are identified, documented and completed; oversees probationary reviews and onboarding feedback surveys.
Talent Management, Development, and Engagement
  • Champions the annual performance management program by coaching employees and managers through meaningful performance discussions and facilitating training sessions
  • Encourages managers and employees to provide real-time and continuous feedback rather than reserving this for mid-year and end of year reviews.
  • Engages with employees and managers to identify career progression opportunities and proactively manage performance concerns.
  • Develops and delivers enterprise-level manager training and leadership development programs; designs curriculum aligned to organizational competencies and facilitates sessions.
  • Identifies high-potential talent and flight-risk employees using data-driven insights; develops targeted retention and development strategies.
  • Leads the Vancouver office admin team (HR& Office Coordinator and Office Services Assistant) to drive employee engagement initiatives and maintain organizational culture and morale.
Compensation, Payroll and Benefits
  • Manages bi-weekly payroll for Vancouver office ensuring accurate processing while complying with federal, provincial and local regulations; produces annual payroll reports (T4s, tax filings).
  • Demonstrates a deep knowledge of the local tax regime in troubleshooting any payroll or benefit related queries whether from an employee or employer perspective. For example, management of the SRBP.
  • Proactively identifies opportunities to optimize employee benefits; ensures competitive market positioning and cost-effective benefit design.
  • Assists Director, Human Resources with administration of annual merit program and short-term incentive program in the HCM.
HR Technology and Analytics
  • Maintains the existing Power BI HR analytics modules to support data-driven decision-making; uses HR data on turnover, hiring, retention, and performance to identify trends and recommend solutions to senior leadership.
  • Explores and evaluates new HR analytics and people data solutions to enhance reporting and decision-making capabilities; identifies opportunities to improve HR processes and system functionality.
  • Identifies and adopts AI-powered tools and automation to streamline HR operations and increase efficiency.
Other Tasks and Projects
  • Contributes to global HR initiatives, systems and process improvement; ensures local operations align with global standards and best practices.
  • Participates in local audits and prepares any necessary reports.
  • Chairs the global CSR committee and produces the quarterly report.
  • Collaborates on ESG-related people initiatives.
  • Oversees the local approach to workplace flexibility and ensures appropriate balance and compliance.
  • Supports other HR projects and business initiatives as needed.
Requirements (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)
  • University Degree or Diploma in Human Resources.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ HR experience in a generalist capacity including demonstratable knowledge of payroll processing.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (preferably with experience of report and policy writing)
  • Excellent human relations, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop strong working relationships and partnerships.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills; ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
  • Ability to work well both independently as well as part of a team.
  • Take initiative and has a willingness to take on additional responsibilities and drive improvements.
  • Able to manage confidential matters in a discreet manner.
  • Technically savvy with expert level computer skills, including but not limited to: Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and SharePoint.
  • Experience working with an ATS and/or HCM.
  • Comfortable with data analysis and translating HR metrics into strategic recommendations.
  • Adaptability and comfort navigating complex organizational dynamics and diverse leadership styles.
