Job summary

John Howard Society of Durham Region is seeking a Manager, Human Resources to lead day-to-day HR services across a diverse, unionized, multi-program environment. This role reports to the CEO and serves as the organization’s primary operational HR professional.

You will provide practical, credible advice to leaders, manage complex employee and labour relations matters, drive payroll and HRIS administration via ADP Workforce Now, support policy development, recruitment, and workforce planning, and

Qualifications

  • Five years of progressive HR experience with broad operational portfolio
  • Experience in a unionized environment with collective agreement interpretation and labour relations
  • Strong knowledge of Ontario employment legislation and contemporary HR practices
  • Payroll administration experience, ideally with HRIS/payroll integration
  • Experience with ADP Workforce Now, including Payroll and Time and Attendance
  • CHRP/CHRL designation or equivalent experience preferred
  • Experience in employee benefits and pension programs
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with sound judgment
  • Ability to handle confidential matters with discretion

Full-Time, Permanent | 35 hours per week

Salary: $70,674 - $84,462 annually

JHS Durham is seeking an experienced Human Resources professional to join our management team as Manager, Human Resources.

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Manager, Human Resources is the organization's primary operational HR professional, responsible for the day-to-day delivery of Human Resources services across a diverse, unionized, multi-program environment.

This is a broad, hands-on HR role for an experienced practitioner who is comfortable working independently, providing credible advice to leaders, managing complex employee and labour relations matters, and balancing multiple priorities. The successful candidate will bring established HR knowledge and judgment to the role and will be expected to provide practical, consistent and solutions-focused HR support across the organization.

What You'll Be Responsible For
  • Employee and labour relations, including collective agreement interpretation, grievances, workplace investigations, performance management, progressive discipline and workplace conflict
  • Recruitment and selection, onboarding, employment changes and offboarding
  • Workplace accommodations, disability and leave management, attendance management and return-to-work processes
  • Administration of employee benefits and pension programs
  • Payroll processing and administration through ADP Workforce Now
  • HRIS administration, including employee data, Time and Attendance, payroll, reporting and related HR processes
  • HR policy development, implementation and legislative compliance
  • Job descriptions, job evaluation and classification processes
  • Occupational health and safety and workplace violence and harassment requirements
  • HR reporting, records management and employment documentation
  • Supporting workforce planning, organizational change and other initiatives requiring professional HR expertise
  • Supporting collective bargaining preparation and implementation in collaboration with the CEO, legal counsel and bargaining team

The Manager will work closely with the CEO and management team on complex or higher-risk matters and will be expected to identify emerging HR risks, provide professional recommendations and recognize when matters require executive or legal consultation.

What You'll Bring

This position requires an experienced Human Resources practitioner who is able to independently manage a broad operational HR portfolio. The successful candidate will bring:

  • Post-secondary education in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, Labour Relations or a related discipline
  • A minimum of five years of progressive Human Resources experience, including demonstrated experience independently managing a broad HR portfolio
  • Demonstrated experience working in a unionized environment, including collective agreement interpretation and labour relations
  • Strong knowledge of Ontario employment legislation and contemporary Human Resources practices
  • Hands-on experience with employee relations, workplace investigations, performance management, progressive discipline, accommodations, disability and leave management and recruitment
  • Demonstrated experience with payroll administration and processing, preferably within an integrated HRIS/payroll environment
  • Strong HRIS knowledge and experience; direct experience with ADP Workforce Now, including Payroll and Time and Attendance, is strongly preferred
  • Experience administering employee benefits and pension programs
  • Strong professional judgment and the ability to provide clear, credible and practical HR advice to managers and senior leadership
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, conflict resolution, organizational and documentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage sensitive and confidential matters with discretion

A CHRP or CHRL designation, or demonstrated equivalent professional HR experience, is preferred.

Experience within a non-profit, social service, health, community service or similarly complex multi-program environment would be considered an asset.
