Job summary

Savanna Drilling seeks an HSE Superintendent to enhance health, safety, and environmental performance across rigs. You’ll work with field operations and management to ensure regulatory compliance and a strong safety culture, with 80% field visits and 20% office duties.

You will mentor crews, lead incident investigations, conduct audits, and drive continuous improvement in safety practices and operational integrity. This role reports to the HSE Manager.

Qualifications

• Certificate / Diploma in OH&S from an accredited school.
• 3-5 years’ industry experience, drilling/completions background preferred.
• Experience in incident investigation (Root Cause Analysis) is highly regarded.
• Working knowledge of OH&S, AER, WCB Regulations, and IRPs.

Responsibilities

• Conduct regular field visits (approximately 80% field / 20% office) to assess compliance with safety policies.
• Support rig operations in implementing Savanna’s HSE programs.
• Ensure corporate HSE standards are met to maintain regulatory compliance and an injury-free workplace.
• Promote a proactive safety culture and mentor rig personnel on the HSE Management System.
• Attend and support safety meetings, pre-job planning, orientations, and toolbox talks.
• Deliver safety training sessions and HSE information briefings.
• Encourage hazard identification, elimination, and controls across rig sites.
• Assist investigations with root cause analysis and corrective actions.
• Monitor site safety performance and recommend risk mitigation measures.
• Report incidents promptly to the HSE Manager and document audits/inspections.

Job description

The HSE Superintendent is responsible for supporting and enhancing the health, safety, and environmental performance of Savanna Drilling’s operations. This leadership role works closely with field operations and management to ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements, while promoting a strong safety culture across all rig locations. The HSE Superintendent plays a key role in incident prevention, conducting field audits, providing guidance to crews, and driving continuous improvement in safety practices and operational integrity. This position reports to the HSE Manager, and works in close collaboration with Operations Management and Field Leadership to support safe and compliant rig operations.

Summary of Duties (Duties may include, but are not limited to the following):

Field Support & Compliance Oversight

• Conduct regular field visits (approximately 80% field / 20% office) to support and evaluate compliance with safety policies and procedures.
• Support rig operations in the implementation and consistent application of Savanna’s Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) programs.
• Ensure all corporate HSE standards are met to maintain regulatory compliance and support an incident/injury-free workplace.
• Remain current and knowledgeable on provincial and federal OH&S legislation and applicable safety regulations across all operating areas.
• Promote a proactive safety culture by mentoring rig personnel on the Savanna Safety Management System.
• Attend and support operational safety meetings, including pre-job planning (Fresh Starts), orientations, and toolbox talks.
• Facilitate or deliver safety training sessions and HSE information briefings related to internal policies, industry guidelines, or legislative updates.
• Encourage and support proactive hazard identification, elimination, and control across all rig sites.
• Assist operations and HSE teams in incident investigations, including root cause analysis and development of corrective actions.
• Monitor site safety performance and provide recommendations to mitigate risk and improve overall safety practices.

Leadership & Culture Development

• Serve as a safety role model, promoting Savanna Drilling’s Vision and Values across all teams and operational environments.
• Support and reinforce a positive and collaborative safety culture.
• Champion continuous improvement and accountability in safety leadership.

Administrative & Other Duties

• Ensure timely reporting of all incidents to the HSE Manager.
• Maintain accurate documentation of safety audits, inspections, training, and field observations.
• Support other duties or special projects as assigned by the HSE Manager.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Strong Organizational skills;
• Strong knowledge in MS Word, Excel and Power Point;
• Respond calmly to emergency and/or critical situations;
• Ability to communicate clearly, confidently and concisely;
• Ability to source information and provide competent advice;
• Ability to manage conflict and changing priorities;
• Must be able to perform duties with minimal supervision;
• Ability to travel to remote rig sites in multiple provinces.

• Technical writing or experience in program development is considered an asset.

Education and Experience:

• Certificate / Diploma in OH&S from accredited school
• 3-5 years’ industry experience, including drilling and/or completions background is preferable;
• A commensurate background in practical field applications of workplace health, safety and environment processes in relevant industry is highly regarded;
• Experience and strong knowledge in incident investigation (Root Cause Analysis);
• Working knowledge of OH&S, AER, WCB Regulations, and IRPs;
• Maintain all required training certificates and tickets as per Savanna Drilling training matrices for this position.

Special Conditions:

• Ability to travel extensively to worksites; (must have valid driver’s license)
• Ability to work unconventional hours on occasion, as required.
• Must be willing and able to work rotational on call schedule
• This position is based in Leduc, Alberta with travel across Western Canada
