Job description

We are seeking a hands-on Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) professional to support the safe and environmentally responsible delivery of construction and commissioning projects. In this role, you will help implement site-specific HSE programs, monitor regulatory compliance, and reinforce safety standards across all project phases. You will work closely with site supervisors, employees, contractors, clients, and project leadership to identify risks, prevent incidents, and promote a proactive safety culture. Your responsibilities will span field inspections, risk assessments, environmental controls, incident investigations, and workforce training. You will also contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen operational performance and consistency across project sites. This opportunity is suited to a practical, influential safety professional who thrives in dynamic industrial environments and is comfortable supporting high-risk activities and project teams in the field.

Accountabilities
  • HSE Program Implementation: Support the development and execution of site-specific HSE plans, including Site Safety Management Plans (SSMPs), Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), Emergency Response Plans, and Environmental Protection Plans.
  • Project Lifecycle Compliance: Ensure HSE requirements are consistently applied throughout pre-mobilization, planning, mobilization, construction, commissioning, and demobilization.
  • Field Inspections and Risk Assessments: Conduct routine site inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify hazards, evaluate risks, and promote safe work practices.
  • High‑Risk Activity Oversight: Provide HSE guidance for hazardous materials and waste management, lifting and rigging, electrical work and commissioning, confined space entry, and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) activities.
  • Audit and Inspection Support: Provide on-site assistance during client audits, regulatory inspections, critical project activities, and periods requiring Site Safety and Health Officer coverage.
  • Environmental Protection: Implement and monitor environmental controls related to spill prevention and response, waste management, and protection of the surrounding environment during construction and commissioning.
  • Regulatory and Environmental Compliance: Ensure adherence to applicable environmental regulations, project-specific requirements, and internal HSE standards. Support the preparation and maintenance of environmental documentation and reports.
  • Incident Investigation: Participate in incident and near‑miss investigations through evidence collection, fact‑finding, root cause analysis, and the development of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Corrective Action Tracking: Monitor corrective actions through completion and maintain accurate records of incidents, near misses, safety observations, and other HSE activities.
  • Training and Safety Communication: Deliver and support site orientations, toolbox talks, safety meetings, HSE campaigns, and task-specific training for employees and contractors.
  • Safety Culture Development: Reinforce Stop Work Authority, behavioral‑based safety, hazard recognition, risk awareness, and appropriate risk tolerance across project teams.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Communicate HSE expectations to supervisors, employees, contractors, and project personnel, serving as a liaison between site teams, HSE leadership, corporate functions, clients, and contractors.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Prepare and maintain HSE records and documentation required by clients, project specifications, regulatory agencies, and internal procedures.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve HSE performance, operational efficiency, and compliance while contributing to lessons learned and sharing best practices across projects.
Requirements
  • Education: An associate or bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  • Professional Experience: Approximately 3–7 years of HSE experience in construction, commissioning, heavy industrial, or energy‑sector environments.
  • HSE Certifications: Preferred credentials include Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or equivalent, and OSHA 500 Outreach Trainer certification.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of OSHA construction standards and the practical application of occupational health and safety requirements in project environments.
  • Safety Planning: Experience supporting site‑specific safety planning, including SSMPs, JSAs, emergency response procedures, and other project HSE documentation.
  • Field Safety Expertise: Ability to identify hazards, conduct risk assessments, support high‑risk work activities, and influence safe behaviors among frontline personnel.
  • Environmental Management: Familiarity with environmental protection measures, waste management, spill prevention, and applicable environmental compliance requirements.
  • Incident Management: Understanding of incident investigation, root cause analysis, corrective action management, and HSE reporting.
  • Project‑Based Experience: Experience supporting multi‑site or project‑based HSE programs is preferred.
  • Communication and Influence: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage frontline workers, contractors, supervisors, and client representatives.
  • Leadership and Accountability: Ability to reinforce compliance requirements, encourage safe decision‑making, and address unsafe practices constructively and consistently.
  • Proactive Working Style: A practical, hands‑on approach, strong attention to detail, and the ability to adapt to changing priorities in dynamic field environments.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to walk and stand regularly, handle equipment and materials, and perform activities that may involve reaching, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. The role regularly requires lifting up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Travel Availability: Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally as required by project needs.
Benefits
  • Work Arrangement: The source posting identifies the position as remote. However, the role requires a strong field presence at project sites, so the specific Canada‑based work arrangement and travel expectations should be confirmed during recruitment.
  • Professional Development: Opportunity to strengthen expertise in construction and commissioning safety, environmental compliance, risk management, and industrial project delivery.
  • Technical Impact: Direct involvement in safety‑critical construction and commissioning activities, with opportunities to improve HSE performance across project teams.
  • Collaborative Environment: Work with site supervisors, project managers, contractors, clients, and HSE leadership across multidisciplinary project environments.
  • Inclusive Workplace: Commitment to equal employment opportunities and an inclusive environment that welcomes people from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Compensation and Additional Benefits: The original job description does not specify a salary range, healthcare coverage, retirement plans, paid leave, or other specific benefits. These details should be confirmed with the hiring team.
