ABOUT THE POSITION
Nahanni Construction Ltd. is hiring a Safety Advisor to work on a rotational schedule at a remote mine site for the project duration. Reporting to the Project and HSE Manager, the HSE Advisor is a field-based role and will be the primary contact for all safety related programs, policies, and incident investigations, on the site. Position is estimated to have a 3 month duration with possibility of extension and is based 5 kilometers outside of Yellowknife, NWT.
Compensation dependent on experience; position includes comprehensive benefits package.
SCOPE
- Develop a working knowledge of the Nahanni Construction Ltd.’s HSE policies & procedures.
- Advise and collaborate with the Project Management Teams and Corporate HSE Manager.
- Assist with the development and implementation of the Project Specific HSE Plan.
- Provide information applicable to health, safety, and environment legislation and regulations to site employees and staff as required.
- Assist in the development and implementation of the Emergency Response Plan (ERP) and verify that the applicable ERP procedures are part of the Project HSE Plan.
- Ensure that the project is following the Project Specific HSE Plan standards determined through auditing and observation.
- Provide support in the development of hazard assessments for medium to high level risk activities prior to project start, and during the life cycle of the project.
- Assist project personnel in conducting Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHAs) and Job Hazard Assessments (JHA’s) when required.
- Conduct FLHA/JHA audits for accuracy and relevance to the work being performed.
- Complete and/or source and track HSE training and orientations for project personnel.
- Work collaboratively with Site Superintendent and Territorial Government Occupational Health & Safety inspectors during workplace inspections; ensure corrective measures are actioned in order to comply with legislation.
- Assist in evaluating Subcontractors’ pre-qualification HSE documentation; monitor Subcontractor safety performance and verify correction and redirection as needed.
- Perform audits and additional inspections as directed by project management.
- Ensure that corrective actions identified during inspections are implemented.
- Evaluate HSE inspection reports to identify unsatisfactory performance trends.
- Assist in the preparation of trending reports for leading and lagging indicators and following up on any noted deficiencies.
- Prepare weekly/monthly HSE performance statistics and circulate to project management and as otherwise directed by project management.
- Provide support and recommendations with the incident investigation process.
- Assist with permitting requirements as defined by the client and the Nahanni Construction Ltd. HSE Policy.
- Maintain HSE documentation (inspections, FLHAs, JHAs, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), Toolbox and HSE Meetings, etc.).
- Attend client progress meetings, contractor start-up meetings, and daily/weekly various safety meetings.
- Maintain positive and professional working relationships while interacting and communicating with all levels of management, clients, consultants and visitors.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by Management.
- Enforce and update all company and Territorial policies.
REQUIREMENTS
·3 years’ experience working as a Safety Advisor with preference given to those in the industrial construction or mining industry.
·Professional Health and Safety designation preferred (CRSP, CSP, ASP, NSCO, etc.) although a minimum of a NCSO is required.
·Current Standard First Aid is required; Advanced First Aid preferred.
·Proficient on Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
·Knowledge of the OH&S Act & Regulations for Construction Projects, Human Rights Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, and other legislation as it relates to construction projects i.e., Canadian Standards, etc.
·Experience with disability management, accident investigation, workplace inspections, and job hazard analyses
·Working outdoors in all weather conditions
·Valid Drivers License
·Pass a Criminal Record Background Check

LOCATION
This position will be based 5 km outside of Yellowknife, NWT with flights to and from, accommodations, meals and rotation allowance provided.
SCHEDULE
12 hours shifts on a two (2) weeks on - two (2) weeks off rotation.
