Job summary

ATS Traffic is seeking an experienced Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Advisor to support operations across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. This role reports to the HSE Director and focuses on regulatory guidance, risk management, training, auditing, incident management, and continuous improvement.

The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, builds strong relationships, and is passionate about safe, compliant workplaces.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety; diploma preferred.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of progressive Health & Safety experience.
  • Willingness to travel frequently across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba; valid Class 5 driver’s licence.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Health, Safety & Environment leadership across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
  • Advise operations on regulatory compliance and risk management; lead audits and inspections.
  • Develop and maintain safety documentation, policies, SOPs, and risk assessments.
  • Support COR audits, incident investigations, near-miss reviews, and root-cause analyses.
  • Deliver safety training, onboarding, toolbox talks, and competency development.
  • Foster a proactive safety culture and coach leaders on safety leadership.

Compensation: $80,000- $90,000, based on experience

About the Opportunity

ATS Traffic is seeking an experienced and motivated Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Advisor to support operations throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

Reporting directly to the Director, Health, Safety & Environment, the HSE Advisor serves as a trusted partner to operational leaders by providing regulatory guidance, safety leadership, risk management support, training, auditing, incident management, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Health & Safety Leadership
  • Serve as the primary HSE resource for assigned branches across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
  • Support managers, supervisors, and employees in implementing and maintaining ATS Traffic's Health, Safety & Environmental Management System.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture through coaching, mentoring, engagement, and visible leadership.
  • Provide practical guidance on hazard identification, risk assessment, incident prevention, and regulatory compliance.
  • Support operational leaders in achieving safety objectives and performance targets.
Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management
  • Monitor compliance with provincial legislation, client requirements, company policies, and industry best practices.
  • Conduct branch, yard, facility, vehicle, equipment, and field inspections.
  • Perform operational safety audits and risk assessments.
  • Identify hazards and work collaboratively with operations teams to implement corrective actions.
  • Develop, review, and maintain safety documentation including policies, procedures, SOPs, SJPs, SWPs, and hazard assessments.
  • Communicate legislative updates and regulatory changes to stakeholders.
COR & Audit Management
  • Support the ongoing success and continuous improvement of ATS Traffic's COR program.
  • Coordinate and participate in internal and external COR audits.
  • Develop and monitor corrective action plans arising from audits and inspections.
  • Assist branches in maintaining audit readiness and compliance requirements.
  • Contribute to annual safety objectives and strategic HSE initiatives.
  • Support Leaders incident investigations, near-miss reviews, and root cause analyses.
  • Ensure incidents are reported, documented, investigated, and tracked accurately.
  • Develop corrective and preventative action plans to reduce recurrence.
  • Support injury management, return-to-work programs, and modified work initiatives.
  • Assist with WCB/Workers' Compensation claims management and regulatory reporting requirements.
Training & Employee Development
  • Coordinate and facilitate employee onboarding and safety orientation programs.
  • Deliver classroom, virtual, and field-based safety training.
  • Develop toolbox talks, training materials, and educational resources.
  • Support leadership development initiatives for supervisors and managers.
  • Monitor training compliance and competency requirements.
  • Assist with learning management and training administration systems.
Joint Health & Safety Committees
  • Coordinate and support Joint Health & Safety Committees and Health & Safety Representatives.
  • Ensure committee activities comply with legislative requirements.
  • Encourage employee participation in safety initiatives and continuous improvement efforts.
Client & Contractor Compliance
  • Manage contractor compliance platforms and client prequalification systems.
  • Maintain company profiles and documentation within platforms such as Avetta, ISNetworld, ComplyWorks, ContractorCheck, and similar compliance systems.
  • Coordinate required submissions including COR documentation, certificates of insurance, training records, and client-specific requirements.
  • Monitor compliance status and address deficiencies proactively.
  • Support operations in maintaining customer compliance requirements.
  • Analyze incident trends, inspection findings, audit results, and leading indicators.
  • Develop performance reports, scorecards, dashboards, and metrics.
  • Provide recommendations to improve safety performance and reduce operational risk.
  • Participate in corporate HSE projects and process-improvement initiatives.
  • Support implementation of new safety programs, technologies, and management systems.
Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety (Diploma preferred).
  • Minimum 3-5 years of progressive Health & Safety experience.
  • Experience supporting multiple locations, branches, or geographic regions.
  • Experience conducting workplace inspections, audits, and incident investigations.
  • Experience supporting or managing COR audit programs and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Experience using contractor compliance and prequalification platforms.
  • Strong working knowledge of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba occupational health and safety legislation.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence with an acceptable driver's abstract.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
Preferred Qualifications
  • CRSP or CRST designation (or working toward certification).
  • Valid ACSA COR Auditor Certification.
  • Experience managing WCB claims and return-to-work programs.
  • Experience within construction, traffic control, transportation, or related industries.
Technical Skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience using safety management software and reporting systems.
  • Familiarity with Intelex, UKG, SharePoint, Microsoft Forms, and Power BI is considered an asset.
  • Experience managing compliance platforms including Avetta, ISNetworld, ComplyWorks, ContractorCheck, and similar compliance sites.
  • Strong leadership and relationship-building abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management capabilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
