Job description

HR Manager, Automotive Retail (Recruiting, People Operations & Health & Safety)

Hiring good people, giving them a good start, being there when they need help, making the processes work. If you care about getting the details right, you’ll own all of it here.

Mission/purpose of the role

Own the day-to-day HR function at Downtown AutoGroup: recruit great people, onboard every new teammate consistently, support employees and managers, run our health & safety program, and continuously improve how we manage our people.

This is a hands-on role. You'll think strategically about how our people practices should work and you’ll be the one

What you’ll do
  • Own recruiting across Downtown AutoGroup, from understanding what managers need through sourcing, interviewing, selection and building pipelines for hard-to-fill roles.
  • Own onboarding and day-to-day people operations, including in-person onboarding, employee documentation, changes, departures and keeping our HR systems and processes organized.
  • Be the first point of contact for employees and managers on everyday HR matters, including attendance, performance, leaves, accommodations and return-to-work issues.
  • Run our workplace health & safety program, including JHSCs, inspections, training, incident follow-up, WSIB and required documentation.
  • Work closely with managers to solve people issues practically, knowing what can be handled simply and what needs to be escalated.
  • Find and fix weak or inefficient HR processes, whether the problem is recruiting, onboarding, administration, manager practices or something employees keep running into.
  • Help build a stronger HR function as we grow, using what you see across the business to identify patterns, recommend improvements and put better systems in place.
What you bring (must-haves)
  • Broad hands-on HR experience, including recruiting, onboarding, employee support and HR administration.
  • Proven success running full-cycle recruiting, including direct sourcing for difficult-to-fill roles.
  • Experience handling day-to-day employee and manager HR questions with sound judgment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; you're comfortable owning both important projects and administrative follow-through.
  • Ability to build or improve HR processes rather than simply operate within existing ones.
  • Clear, professional communication; builds trust with frontline staff, managers and executives.
  • Comfortable working independently, taking ownership and knowing when to elevate an issue.
  • Organized, hands-on operator who can be on-site, move between rooftops and follow through.
Nice to have
  • Automotive retail or adjacent field experience such as dealership, retail, hospitality, logistics, construction or skilled trades.
  • Experience recruiting technicians or other hard-to-hire skilled roles.
  • Experience administering an Ontario workplace health & safety program.
  • Experience with JHSCs, WSIB and return-to-work processes.
  • Experience working in a multi-location organization.
  • Experience building HR processes in a growing or decentralized business.
  • CHRP/CHRL designation or progress toward one.
Where and how you’ll work
  • On-site, full-time at Downtown AutoGroup Autoplex, 77 East Don Roadway (Queen St E & DVP), with visits to nearby Toronto locations as needed.
  • Reports to and partners closely with the executive leadership team.
  • This is a highly visible role with regular interaction with employees and managers across the organization.
Pay & benefits
  • Base salary: CAD $67,500-$91,000 per year, commensurate with skills and experience.
  • Benefits: health and dental.

This is an in-person role.
