Homeward Trust Edmonton (HTE) is a not-for-profit organization charged with ending homelessness in Edmonton. Our efforts are guided by community need and priorities as outlined in Edmonton’s Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness. Homeward Trust coordinates and provides resources for local efforts to address homelessness and its devastating impacts on individuals, families, and communities. We work with agencies, neighborhoods, mainstream systems, community members, and all orders of government in pursuit of this singular objective, grounded in the belief that we can, and will, end homelessness in Edmonton. Our programs involve both housing (capital project funding, property management and sourcing access to new or existing units for client use) and supportive services for individuals in or seeking access to housing programs. We believe in finding housing accommodations first and then establishing the individualized supports required by the client to remain in a home.

The Housing Access Coordinator (HAC) is responsible for screening and referring individuals and families seeking assistance due to homelessness or the risk of losing their homes. This role involves determining eligibility for Housing with Supports programs or other relevant housing and community support services, while providing liaison and warm referral services to connect participants with appropriate resources. As a key service ambassador, the Housing Access Coordinator plays an essential role in delivering efficient and effective services, provides a positive and engaging experience for participants, multitasking abilities, and excellent communication to meet participant needs. This position adheres to Homeward Trust’s standards and ensures high-quality service for individuals and families in need of housing solutions.

This position reports to the Team Lead, Coordinated Access, and is part of the Coordinated Access Team, which plays a crucial role in managing access to housing and support services.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of a High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Post secondary education in relevant field of study (Social work/Human Services) and/or related work experience.
  • Experience working with marginalized populations.
  • Direct experience with Housing First initiatives, not-for-profit organization, property. management, and/or experience with providing positive and engaging experiences for individuals is considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of housing, income support, and related agency/government assistance programs in the Edmonton community.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures and the challenges faced by First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities. Experience working with culturally diverse populations is an asset.
  • Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume, detail-oriented environment with excellent multitasking, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Skilled in research with a focus on delivering accurate and reliable information.
  • Strong conflict resolution skills, able to manage and diffuse conflicts effectively.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Outlook, internet navigation, and ETO or similar database programs.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a team or independently, managing competing demands with minimal supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, fostering positive relationships with coworkers, participants, community partners, and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion, compassion, and empathy while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Results-oriented, with a focus on meeting high standards and adjusting as necessary to achieve goals.
  • Committed to embracing and promoting the Cultural Commitments of Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated, and Excellent service delivery.
  • A confident self-starter, able to meet challenges and overcome obstacles.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license is an asset.

Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to referral requests and housing inquiries in a high-volume, fast-paced environment, ensuring a professional and welcoming experience.
  • Assist individuals and families with creating housing plans, connecting them to necessary resources for action.
  • Provide responsive service through various access channels (telephone, email, in person), utilizing active listening and problem-solving skills.
  • Communicate effectively in writing and verbally, ensuring professionalism, accuracy, and clarity in all responses.
  • Handle time-sensitive inquiries while applying problem-solving and technical skills, using multiple systems.
  • Facilitate Housing with Supports referrals to appropriate agencies based on capacity, expertise, and caseload.
