Job summary

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) invites applications for a Housekeeping Aide at qathet General Hospital in Powell River, BC. The role supports a client- and family-centered model of care and promotes a safe, respectful environment for patients and staff.

The Environmental Services team cleans clinical and non-clinical areas, removes waste, and maintains floor and surface sanitation in accordance with policies and procedures. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Records Check.

Qualifications

• Must have Grade 10 or equivalent.
• Ability to perform physical cleaning duties and routines.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to organize workloads and operate related equipment.

Responsibilities

• Perform damp dusting, dry and wet mopping of floors.
• Clean and disinfect patient rooms, washrooms and equipment.
• Handle regular and biomedical waste according to policy.
• Make beds and maintain overall cleanliness of the facility.

The Housekeeping Aide performs a variety of cleaning duties such as but not limited to damp dusting; dry and wet mopping of floors; floor maintenance and refinishing using appropriate equipment; cleaning & disinfecting ceiling, wall, vent, washroom, bed, furniture and equipment; regular and biomedical waste collection and removal; spill clean-up; bed-making; and maintaining the overall cleanliness of the facility according to organizational policies, procedures and routines.

About Environmental Services With VCH

Many people are familiar with the terms 'janitorial' or 'housekeeping' but these terms don't necessarily encompass all their responsibilities. Rather, the role of Environmental Services is to work with hospital staff to keep employees, patients and visitors safe with proper medical cleaning and disinfecting. Environmental Services works closely with infection control and patient care teams to clean and disinfect clinical and non-clinical areas, including patient care rooms, offices, washrooms and common areas. They also remove garbage, recycling, soiled linen and bio-hazard waste, vacuum carpets, clean and polish floors and disinfect walls and beds, among other duties.

As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks. For all new hires and appointments to Vancouver Coastal Health, you will be asked to provide this information as part of the onboarding process.
