Job Description: Hospital Director

The Hospital Director is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of a multi veterinarian, 24-hour emergency, specialist and referral hospital. The successful candidate will be able to develop effective management systems to facilitate growth, establish a dynamic team culture, drive results and manage existing operations.

The Role

The Hospital Director is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of a multi veterinarian, 24-hour emergency, specialist and referral hospital. The successful candidate will be able to develop effective management systems to facilitate growth, establish a dynamic team culture, drive results and manage existing operations.

This role requires the hands-on supervision for a team of individuals on 24-hour shift rotations and is expected to work a variety of shifts that include: days, evenings, and weekends.

The Hospital Director reports directly to the VP, Specialty and Emergency Operations.

In addition, the Hospital Director is responsible for ensuring operational controls, administrative and reporting procedures and personnel systems are in place to effectively grow the hospital and to ensure its financial strength and operating efficiency.

As a group, the leadership team is responsible for collaborating with the Hospital Director to ensure sound financial performance and team engagement.

Financial Performance & Reporting

• Develop yearly budget and business plans in conjunction with the leadership team and VP.
• Ensure hospital delivers outstanding financial results and maximizes short and long-term objectives.
• Participate in regular meetings with leadership team to review hospital business plans and financial results.
• Actively monitor and minimize controllable expenses.
• Facilitates the growth of the client base by assessing, developing and implementing new programs.

Leadership

• Effectively build and maintain relationships within a large team comprised of client services, medical support staff and veterinarians.
• Establish immediate credibility as the Director of the hospital by delivering results and navigating cross-functional priorities.
• Drive a culture of excellence focused on delivering gold standard client service, cultivating high morale and generating revenue.
• Collaborate with the leadership team to recruit a high-performance team using effective mentorship and performance management practices and techniques.

Communication & Strategic Planning

• Work cohesively and effectively with hospital Medical Director to carry out and implement local and leadership initiatives.
• Have regular communication with VP of Specialty and Medical Director to discuss execution of hospital success.
• Execute strategy and vision for hospital growth through open communication with various team members.
• Prepare and implement organizational improvement, training and problem solving consistent with, and in concert to achieve, the vision of the hospital. Responsible for overseeing implementation timelines and resource management.
• Maintain effective relationships with vendor partners and works to maximize rebate and support levels.
• Effectively and regularly communicate in a timely manner with our VetStrategy support office and operations partners.
• Ensure adherence to all VetStrategy and hospital policies, procedures and protocols.

Human Resources

• Create training plans for all clinic staff to ensure exceptional medical and client care to enable team members to grow and develop professionally.
• Ensure staff receive regular coaching, performance evaluations and mentoring including continuing education to assist in achieving objectives.
• Provide coaching and mentorship to PM/Leads
• Participate in DVM Recruitment and execute recruitment visits.
• Manage any performance or disciplinary issues, following VetStrategy protocols for documentation.
• Ensure all relevant agency (OVMA, CVO, WHMIS, OHS, Employment Standards, etc.)
• requirements, rules and regulations are followed.

Qualifications & Experience

• Minimum 5+ years leadership experience in a healthcare setting.
• Degree in business administration or other relevant post-secondary education.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic initiatives.
• Strong understanding of financial analysis, KPIs and budgeting.
• Designation as a Certified Veterinary Practice Manager (CVPM) considered an asset.
