Homemaker

Department: Health Services – Wellness Centre
Classification/Level: Community Service (CS-1)
Employment Status: Casual/Relief Hours

Reporting Relationship

The Homemaker will work under the supervision of the Home Care Program Manager.

Position Summary

Homemakers will provide service to clients of the Home Care Program who need assistance caring for themselves as a result of aging, sickness, disability and/or other inflictions. Homemaking may include housecleaning, laundry, meal preparation and transportation. Homemakers are responsible for ensuring that service is delivered in a caring and respectful manner, in accordance with relevant policies and industry standards.

Essential Functions
  • Routine housekeeping activities that assist in maintaining a clean and tidy living environment for clients; thoroughly cleans and sanitizes kitchen appliances, kitchen cupboards, washes dishes, cleans bathroom and all floorings, vacuums as necessary and takes out the trash
  • Monitor operation of household appliances and notes and report any items requiring repair
  • Does light laundry or takes laundry to Laundromat and regularly changes bed linens
  • Efficiently maintain accurate and timely reports for effective file management
  • Detect and report immediately any noticeable changes to clients’ health
  • Maintain confidentiality in relation to all clients
  • Provide companionship, friendship, and emotional support.
  • Participate at Team meetings by providing input and making suggestions.
  • Ensure service is delivered in accordance with all relevant policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Monitor supplies and resources.
  • Follow the written care plan.
  • Carry out duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
  • Complete and maintain records of daily activities, observations, and direct hours of service.
  • Attend orientation, in-service training sessions and staff meetings.
  • Develop and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Make decisions and solve problems.
Qualifications
  • At least two (2) years related work experience
  • Experience working with the elderly is a strong asset
  • Valid First Aid/CPR Certification
Other
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License and reliable vehicle
  • Able to work shift work and flexible hours
  • Good communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Knowledge of the Ojibwe culture and traditions
  • Fluency in the Ojibwe language is a strong asset or the willingness to learn

  • Knowledge of principles and process for providing client and personal services, including determinants, meeting quality standards and evaluation of client satisfaction

CRC/VSS Rationale

M’Chigeeng First Nation and its agents are in a position of trust in services to band member children and/or vulnerable adults, so a safe and secure working environment is mandatory. Applicants must provide a clear VSS Certificate, and the CRC must have a record clear and/or dated of any convictions relating to sexual interference, sexual assault, or related charges. The VSS must be current (30 days) and must be an original.

Preference will be given to Anishinabek people.
