Job summary

Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools is seeking a temporary Home Stay Coordinator (0.4 FTE) to support its International Student Education Department.

Reporting to the Homestay Manager, you will recruit homestay families, screen and match students, provide orientations, monitor satisfaction, and respond to crisis events with cultural sensitivity across the district.

Qualifications

• High school graduation or the equivalent.
• Two-year post-secondary diploma in Child and Youth Care or Social Work; with specialized training in acculturation.
• A minimum of two years recent and related experience.
• Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License.
• Excellent skills in database management, spreadsheet and word processing software including True North.
• Ability to compose confidential correspondence and documents.
• Represent NLPS in the International community in person and in writing.
• Leadership, interpersonal and conflict resolution/mediation skills.
• Knowledge of international students' needs and cultural bridging.
• Residency in the Nanaimo area preferred.

About The Role

Reporting to the Homestay Manager or designate, the Home Stay Coordinator helps coordinate the Homestay Program for the International Student Education Department and is required to work flexible hours to support the operational needs of the program and department. In addition, periodically, the Homestay Coordinator may be required to immediately attend sites when responding to emergent situations.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain a process for the recruitment of homestay families based on suitable facilities, and evidence of a caring, supportive, and engaged family life.
• Specifically, this includes recruiting new families, ensuring that a criminal record check is submitted for each adult in the homestay, checking references submitted on behalf of the family (when deemed necessary), and vetting the homestay through an interview of the family and an inspection of the accommodation.
• Process student applications for homestay placement Match students and families with attention to the student and family profiles.
• Provide homestay orientations for homestay families and for international students.
• Monitor family and student satisfaction throughout the homestay; specifically, meet with students regularly, and maintain ongoing communication with homestay families on a regular basis.
• Provide ongoing homestay suitability assessment including student exit interviews.
• Provide ongoing guidance to students to assist in their adjustment to their new situations, and respond to crisis situations in a professional, prompt and caring manner.
• Facilitate cross cultural understandings between at home, school, and in the community, and assist in resolving cross cultural conflict.
• Communicate with education agents or parents regarding homestay placements.
• Inform the district Principal - International Education, immediately of any concerns expressed by families or students.
• Meet with homestay families, students and the District Principal - International Education as required to mediate conflicts and resolve concerns.
• Transport students to and from the local airport, medical appointments, new homestays, and other locations as necessary.
• Maintain knowledge of the field of homestays for International Students, by engaging in ongoing professional development and maintain membership in the BC Homestay Association.
• Participate as a member of the Student Discipline Panel of the International Student Education Program as required. Participate in student activities, events and program initiatives to enhance the student experience.

Required Qualifications And Experience

• High school graduation or the equivalent
• Two year post secondary diploma in Child and Youth Care or Social Work; with specialized training in acculturation; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
• A minimum of two years recent and related experience
• Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License
• Excellent skills in database management, spreadsheet and word processing software including International Education software such as True North
• Demonstrated ability to compose a variety of correspondence and documents of a confidential nature
• The ability to represent the Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools in the International community, both in person and through written correspondence.
• Excellent leadership, interpersonal and conflict resolution/mediation skills
• Knowledge and understanding of the problems, concerns, strengths, and traditions of international students, particularly when it affects the adjustment and behaviour of students in homestays
• Knowledge of the similarities and differences between Canadian culture and the cultures of students' home countries, and the ability to bridge these cultures
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain respect for and from students, homestay parents, natural parents, education agents, and community representatives (RCMP, multicultural society, etc.)
• Ability to deal with highly confidential and sensitive issues with a high degree of diplomacy and confidentiality
• Residency in the Nanaimo area is preferred.

Assignment

This is a temporary, excluded role (0.4 FTE), commencing as soon as practicable through until January 4, 2027; this assignment may end early or be extended, subject to the return of the incumbent and operational needs.

Salary

The salary range for this position is $63,293 – $79,116 per annum with 4% in lieu of vacation. Please note, due to the duration of this temporary assignment, the successful incumbent will not be eligible for benefits.

Location

This position is based out of Dover Bay Secondary; however, may work and support throughout the District.
