What We Look For In a High School English Tutor

• Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of literary analysis across genres, rhetoric and argumentation, research writing, grammar and style, vocabulary development, and critical reading of complex texts. Ability to explain literary devices, rhetorical strategies, MLA citation, and thesis-driven essay construction while preparing students for AP English courses, SAT/ACT English sections, and college composition.
• Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching close reading, analytical essay writing, and research methodology for high school English. Guides students through interpreting complex literature, constructing thesis-driven arguments, evaluating source credibility, and writing research papers with proper documentation. Emphasizes developing critical thinking through textual analysis and connects English skills to college readiness, professional communication, and civic participation.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with high school English curricula including state standards and AP course frameworks, and common challenges such as moving beyond summary to analysis, developing sophisticated thesis statements, and integrating textual evidence effectively. Adapts instruction using mentor texts, essay workshops, and discussion-based analysis to support students from general English through honors and AP levels.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
• Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
