Job summary

The YMCA of Greater Toronto is seeking an Adult Programs Director to lead all aspects of the Health & Fitness Centre’s adult offerings. You will oversee program planning, budgeting, staff and volunteer leadership, and collaborations with internal teams to enhance member engagement and ensure safe, high‑quality experiences.

You will manage budgets, supervise Supervisors and program leads, and drive excellence using the Y Way framework.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Kinesiology, Physical Education, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Group Fitness and/or Personal Training certification.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR.
  • Minimum of five years of supervisory experience with health and fitness professionals.
  • Experience developing and leading staff training, including coaching and evaluation.
  • Experience recruiting and training volunteers within the department.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, with excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership in planning, promoting, and implementing all adult programs offered by the Health & Fitness Centre, including Group Fitness, Individual Conditioning, Personal Training, and Adult Recreational Sports.
  • Develop and monitor departmental budgets in collaboration with Supervisors, ensuring accountability for revenue and expense targets.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director of Sports & Leagues to expand HF Adult Recreational Sports programs and leagues.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and direction to Supervisors and full-time program leads to ensure high-quality, safe programs.
  • Oversee staff scheduling, development, and performance management of full-time and part-time staff.
  • Lead and manage the volunteer engagement strategy within Group Fitness and HFGroup Fitness volunteers.
  • Provide leadership for the Aquafit program staffing and safety.
  • Ensure programs meet YMCA standards and conduct regular observations/self-audits.
  • Oversee workforce management and payroll within budget.
  • Support the staff team as Service Leader to promote positive member experiences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

TheHealth & FitnessAdult Programs Director provides leadership and oversight for all adult programs within the Health&Fitness Centre, ensuring alignment with YMCA values and service standards. This roleis responsible forprogram planning, budget management, and the development of staff and volunteer teams to deliver safe, high-quality, and engaging experiences. The Director collaborates with internal departments and community partners to expand program offerings and foster member engagement, retention, and active living. Oversight of operational aspects, including workforce management, equipment, and program evaluation, ensures efficient and consistent service delivery. The position supports a positive member experience by modeling service excellence and promoting alignment across all Health&Fitness initiatives.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide leadership in planning, promoting, and implementing all adult programs offered by the Health&Fitness Centre, including Group Fitness, Individual Conditioning, Personal Training, and Adult Recreational Sports, with the goal of increasing participation and fostering member retention.
  • Provide fiscal leadership by developing and monitoring departmental budgets in collaboration with Supervisors, ensuring accountability for revenue and expense targets, and supporting Supervisors in managing program budgets to achieve departmental goals in alignment with the Y Way service framework.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director of Sports & Leagues to expand and deliver HFAdult Recreational Sports programs and leagues, ensuring safe, inclusive, and well-organized experiences that promote community engagement and active living in alignment with YMCA values.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and direction to Supervisors and full-time program leads responsible for Individual Conditioning, Personal Training, Group Fitness, and Adult Recreational Sports to ensure delivery of high-quality, safe, and member-focused programs.
  • Supervise and provide leadership to full-time adult programs staff, including recruitment and selection, training and development, and performance management; support and coach Supervisors in staff scheduling, development, and performance management of part-time staff to ensure high-quality service delivery across all adult program areas.
  • Provide leadership and accountability for the volunteer engagement strategy within Group Fitness, ensuring the HFGroup Fitness Supervisor effectively recruits, develops, and retains YMCA Volunteers to deliver classes, with emphasis on Y Movement Lab programs.
  • Provide leadership and accountability for the Aquafit program, ensuring the HFGroup Fitness Supervisor recruits, develops, certifies, and retains qualified staff and volunteers to deliver safe, engaging classes in alignment with YMCA standards.
  • Ensure programs and services are delivered with high quality and meet YMCA standards and expectations; conduct regular observations and evaluations of programs and administer self-audits using YMCA tools.
  • Oversee workforce management for Adult Programs staff, including approving timecards, managing vacation and time-off requests, and ensuring payroll accuracy within budget.
  • Oversee equipment and supply needs for Adult Programs, ensuring Supervisors adhere to purchasing standards, maintaining communication with the Program Equipment team regarding repairs and replacements, and managing expenses within approved budgets.
  • Collaborate with facility and program teams to ensure alignment across all Health & Fitness programming and member experience initiatives.
  • Provide direct program leadership in a variety of program areas, modeling effective service delivery and building relationships with members.
  • Support the staff team in the role of Service Leader, promoting positive member experiences using the Y Way framework and fostering relationships with participants and families while responding to feedback.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

You bring:

  • Post-secondary education in Kinesiology, Physical Education, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Group Fitness and/or Personal Training certification.
  • Standard First Aid and CPRrequired.
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in a supervisory role with health and fitness professionals,demonstratingstrong leadership skills to motivate, coach, and develop staff and volunteers, while acknowledging and appreciating contributions.
  • Experience developing and leading staff training, including coaching and evaluation.
  • Experience recruiting and training volunteers within the department.
  • Proficiencyin computer applications, with excellent organizational and time management skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to learnnew programs.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability toestablishrapport with members, staff, and volunteers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Ability to speak multiple languages is an asset.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
