Transit Outreach Worker

Full Time - 3 days on, 3 days off - 7a-7p
Position Summary:
This position works with a Calgary Transit Peace Officer, focusing on being present and visible on the C-Train and stations, providing an alternative response to public intoxications, connecting with those who need a safe place. Transit Outreach Workers help build relationships with peace officers and vulnerable individuals by providing Case Management and alternatives to accessing resources away from the public transit and the stations.
Responsibilities:
- Act in a professional, non-judgmental, empathetic and caring manner with clients, treating them with dignity and respect
- Provide immediate response to distress or crisis situations
- Be aware of and proactively refer and advocate for community and social services as needed
- Role model Alpha House’s values and be a positive ambassador when interacting with the public, partners, and businesses
- Carry a case load, engage in case management, justice interventions, and advocate for long-term solutions to exit homelessness
- Drive an agency van and conduct sweeps of C-Trains and Stations on foot
- Conduct administrative tasks including preparing reports, case notes, and daily stats
- Maintain ethical, efficient, and responsible practices with staff, Transit Partners, and clients
- Work as part of a collaborative team, support each other, and contribute to the agency's mission, including working on DOAP as needed and training new staff
- Foster and maintain relationships with community partners, businesses, and stakeholders to support program and client needs
- Participate in program evaluation as needed
- Provide educational sessions upon request
- Demonstrate knowledge of all policies and procedures and reference them from appropriate sources
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory standards, including maintaining confidentiality at all times
Required Qualifications:
- Diploma or Degree from a public post-secondary institution, preferably in Social Sciences, Social Work, or related fields; those in progress may be considered
- At least 1 year of experience working as part of a team with key stakeholders, providing crisis counseling, problem solving, and outreach work
- Experience working with vulnerable populations and a desire to work with socially disadvantaged people
- Understanding of addictions, including withdrawal management, harm reduction, stages of change, trauma-informed care, crisis management, and mental health issues
- High level of tolerance, non-judgment, compassion, and empathy towards homeless individuals and those struggling with addictions or mental health issues
- Proven rapport-building and advocacy skills
- Strong interpersonal communication skills, respectful and discreet communication, and ability to maintain confidentiality
- Excellent oral and written English communication skills and teamwork abilities
- Knowledge of Community Development
- Open, accepting attitude with situational awareness and appropriate response skills
- Understanding of the Protection of Persons in Care Act
Position Requirements:
- Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination
- Steel-toed footwear
- Class 5 driver’s license (non-GDL) and willingness to obtain a Class 4 license within 45 days
- Ability to physically assist clients from prone to sitting or standing, and vice versa
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and walk up to 8 hours
- Vulnerable Sector Search (valid within last six months, with no relevant results)
- FOIP Certification
- “It’s your Move” training or equivalent Patient Lift training
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Availability to work early mornings, days, and late evenings
