This role is ideal for a technically proficient individual with practical experience in heavy machinery, diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical components, and mechanical repairs. The technician will work with a range of equipment, which may include excavators, bulldozers, loaders, graders, forklifts, dump trucks, cranes, and other industrial or construction machinery.

The position requires a strong understanding of mechanical systems, the ability to diagnose complex faults, and a commitment to workplace safety. The successful candidate will collaborate with fleet managers, equipment operators, maintenance supervisors, and other technicians to maintain equipment availability, control maintenance costs, and extend the service life of valuable fleet assets.

2. Key Responsibilities
  • Preventive Maintenance: Perform scheduled maintenance on heavy equipment and fleet vehicles, including oil changes, filter replacements, lubrication, fluid inspections, belt adjustments, and routine servicing.
  • Equipment Inspection: Conduct daily, weekly, and periodic inspections to identify mechanical defects, fluid leaks, worn components, damaged parts, and potential safety hazards.
  • Mechanical Repairs: Diagnose and repair diesel engines, transmissions, braking systems, steering assemblies, suspension components, drivetrains, and other mechanical systems.
  • Hydraulic System Maintenance: Inspect, test, troubleshoot, and repair hydraulic pumps, cylinders, hoses, valves, fittings, and related components.
  • Electrical and Electronic Diagnostics: Identify and resolve faults involving wiring, batteries, alternators, starters, sensors, control modules, and electronic monitoring systems.
  • Fault Diagnosis: Use diagnostic tools, technical manuals, service information, and testing equipment to identify the root causes of equipment failures and recommend effective repairs.
  • Breakdown Response: Respond to equipment breakdowns, assess repair requirements, and carry out emergency or field repairs when operationally necessary.
  • Fleet Availability: Coordinate maintenance activities to ensure equipment is available when required and minimize avoidable downtime.
  • Parts and Inventory Management: Identify required spare parts, monitor consumable supplies, report shortages, and support accurate inventory records.
  • Maintenance Documentation: Maintain detailed records of inspections, repairs, service schedules, parts used, equipment hours, and outstanding maintenance requirements.
  • Safety Compliance: Follow established safety procedures, lockout/tagout requirements where applicable, equipment isolation practices, and personal protective equipment standards.
  • Quality Control: Test repaired equipment, verify that components function correctly, and confirm that machinery is safe to return to service.
  • External Service Coordination: Assist with coordinating specialist repairs, warranty work, and external maintenance providers when required.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify recurring mechanical problems and recommend improvements to maintenance schedules, repair procedures, and equipment reliability.
  • Team Collaboration: Communicate clearly with equipment operators, supervisors, and fellow technicians regarding equipment condition, repair priorities, and maintenance progress.
3. Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Technical certification, diploma, apprenticeship, or equivalent vocational training in heavy equipment mechanics, diesel mechanics, automotive technology, mechanical engineering technology, or a related discipline.
  • Practical knowledge of diesel engines, mechanical assemblies, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, and electrical equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, equipment diagrams, wiring schematics, and maintenance instructions.
  • Proficiency in using mechanical tools, diagnostic scanners, pressure gauges, multimeters, lifting equipment, and workshop machinery.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to identify the root cause of mechanical and electrical failures.
  • Understanding of preventive maintenance procedures and equipment servicing standards.
  • Knowledge of workplace health and safety practices, safe lifting procedures, and hazardous energy control.
  • Ability to maintain accurate maintenance records and complete service documentation.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with operators, supervisors, and maintenance teams.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize urgent repairs.
  • Physical ability to perform the essential duties of the position, including working in workshops, outdoor environments, and potentially confined or awkward spaces, with reasonable accommodations where applicable.
  • Willingness to learn new diagnostic technologies, equipment systems, and manufacturer-specific maintenance procedures.
  • A valid drivers licence may be required depending on the employers operational needs and local regulations.
4. Experience
  • Previous experience in heavy equipment maintenance, diesel engine repair, fleet servicing, or industrial machinery maintenance is preferred.
  • Typically, 2–5 years of relevant hands-on experience is desirable, although the required level may vary according to the complexity of the fleet and the seniority of the position.
  • Experience maintaining construction equipment, earthmoving machinery, mining equipment, agricultural machinery, transport fleets, or industrial vehicles is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated experience diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical faults.
  • Familiarity with preventive maintenance schedules, equipment inspections, service intervals, and repair documentation.
  • Experience using diagnostic software, electronic testing equipment, and manufacturer service manuals is beneficial.
