Job description

1. Job Summary

HR Service Jobs is seeking a skilled, detail-oriented, and motivated Automotive Service Technician – Vehicle Diagnostics to inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair a wide range of vehicles. The successful candidate will play an essential role in identifying mechanical, electrical, and electronic faults, ensuring vehicles operate safely and efficiently, and delivering reliable automotive service to customers.

This position is ideal for an individual with a strong interest in automotive technology, practical troubleshooting skills, and a commitment to high-quality workmanship. The technician will use modern diagnostic equipment, computerized vehicle systems, technical manuals, and industry-approved repair procedures to identify faults and recommend appropriate solutions.

The role involves working with petrol and diesel vehicles and, where applicable, hybrid and electric vehicles. The technician will collaborate with service advisors, workshop supervisors, mechanics, and other automotive professionals to complete repairs accurately and within established service timelines.

2. Key Responsibilities
  • Vehicle Diagnostics: Perform comprehensive diagnostic assessments to identify mechanical, electrical, electronic, and engine-related faults using appropriate diagnostic tools and testing equipment.
  • Diagnostic Equipment Operation: Operate automotive scan tools, OBD-II diagnostic systems, multimeters, oscilloscopes, and other specialized equipment to retrieve fault codes and evaluate vehicle performance.
  • Mechanical Inspection: Inspect engines, transmissions, braking systems, suspension components, steering systems, cooling systems, and other vehicle assemblies to identify defects and wear.
  • Electrical System Troubleshooting: Diagnose and repair faults involving batteries, alternators, starters, wiring harnesses, sensors, lighting systems, control modules, and electronic components.
  • Engine Performance Analysis: Investigate engine warning lights, starting problems, abnormal noises, excessive emissions, fuel efficiency issues, and irregular engine performance.
  • Repair and Maintenance: Carry out approved repairs, component replacements, routine servicing, and preventive maintenance in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.
  • Fault Identification and Resolution: Analyze diagnostic results, identify root causes, and recommend appropriate corrective actions rather than relying solely on fault-code readings.
  • Technical Documentation: Maintain accurate records of inspections, diagnostic findings, repair procedures, replacement parts, labour hours, and final testing results.
  • Quality Assurance: Conduct post-repair inspections and functional tests to verify that identified problems have been resolved and vehicles meet applicable safety requirements.
  • Customer Communication: Explain technical problems, repair recommendations, and maintenance requirements in clear, professional language.
  • Team Collaboration: Coordinate with service advisors, workshop managers, parts personnel, and other technicians to ensure efficient service delivery.
  • Workshop Safety: Follow workplace safety procedures, use protective equipment, maintain an organized work area, and handle tools and automotive materials responsibly.
  • Technical Updates: Keep up to date with new vehicle technologies, manufacturer service bulletins, diagnostic software, and changing automotive repair practices.
  • Service Efficiency: Complete assigned work within reasonable timeframes while maintaining accuracy, professionalism, and high standards of workmanship.
3. Required Skills and Qualifications
  • A diploma, certificate, vocational qualification, or relevant technical education in Automotive Technology, Automobile Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  • Practical knowledge of vehicle diagnostic procedures, automotive electrical systems, and mechanical repair techniques.
  • Familiarity with OBD-II scanners, electronic control units, diagnostic software, and automotive testing equipment.
  • Understanding of engine management systems, fuel injection systems, transmission systems, braking systems, and vehicle electronics.
  • Ability to interpret diagnostic trouble codes, wiring diagrams, technical specifications, and manufacturer repair instructions.
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Good attention to detail when inspecting components and identifying faults.
  • Ability to use workshop tools and equipment safely and correctly.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to explain technical information to customers and colleagues.
  • Good organizational skills, time management, and the ability to prioritize multiple service tasks.
  • A commitment to customer satisfaction, professional conduct, and continuous learning.
  • A valid driving licence may be required, depending on the employers operational needs and local regulations.
  • Willingness to undertake relevant manufacturer training and additional technical certifications.
4. Experience
  • Candidates with practical experience in automotive maintenance, vehicle servicing, mechanical repairs, or diagnostic troubleshooting are encouraged to apply.
  • Entry-Level Candidates: Applicants with relevant automotive qualifications, apprenticeships, or vocational training may be considered for junior technician opportunities where training and supervision are provided.
  • Experienced Technicians: Previous experience diagnosing and repairing faults in passenger cars, commercial vehicles, or other automotive systems is advantageous.
  • Diagnostic Specialists: Experience using advanced diagnostic scanners, analyzing electronic control systems, troubleshooting intermittent faults, and interpreting manufacturer-specific codes will be beneficial.
  • Industry Exposure: Experience in automotive workshops, dealerships, independent garages, fleet maintenance facilities, or vehicle service centres is desirable.
  • Specialized Knowledge: Familiarity with hybrid vehicles, electric vehicle systems, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and modern vehicle communication networks is an added advantage.
  • The required experience level will depend on the specific vacancy, technical complexity of the work, and training available.
