Job description

Our Whiteshell Laboratories (WL) location is looking for a Heavy Equipment Operator to perform the safe and efficient operation of site heavy equipment and fleet vehicles. What will you be doing!

  • Operating all site and rental heavy equipment and fleet vehicles safely and efficiently.
  • Performing pre and post trip checks on equipment used each time and filling out required vehicle/equipment logbooks.
  • Reporting deficiencies to supervisor.
  • Making judgments on the working condition of all equipment and recommending required repairs.
  • Partaking in job walk downs and pre job kick off meetings providing Job Safety Analysis (JSA) documentation as well as resource and equipment requirements.
  • Taking responsibility for the safety of the work involving the use of heavy equipment and for the safety of personnel in or near the work zone.
  • Taking responsibility to shut down the job, if there is a safety concern.
  • Selecting appropriate equipment for the job.
  • Securing loads and transportation of dangerous goods.
  • Providing pick-ups and deliveries of materials on a daily and weekly schedule.
  • Providing transportation to staff and visitors as directed by lead hand or section leader as needed.
  • Maintaining confidentiality in all matters.
  • Identifying and reporting any real or potential safety hazards; wearing all safety equipment related to your position as well as participating in all safety-training offered through the facility.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
    • Manitoba Class 1 Driver’s License with Air Endorsement an asset.
  • Experience
    • Must have three (3) years’ experience in operation of related heavy equipment, with minimum 1000 hrs./yr operating time.
    • Experience in building demolition and trench excavation.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Knowledge of normal operating parameters (engine temperature, fluid levels, etc.) and required mechanical condition (hoses, engine, tires, etc.) of equipment.
    • Knowledge of digging, trenching, and sloping procedures.
    • Knowledge of demolition equipment, processes and procedures.
    • Knowledge of road construction and maintenance techniques.
    • Knowledge of Work Permits, Job Safety Analysis, Pre-job Briefs, Integrated Work Control and Stop Work Procedures.
    • Skills and ability to operate heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
    • Must be able to safely operate a John Deere 210GLC Track Excavator, Caterpillar 924H Wheel Loader, a Galion 25 Ton Mobile Crane, a John Deere 333E Track Skid Steer, John Deere 470G with long reach stick, XR7038 Telehandler, demolition attachments including jackhammer shear and pulverizer or equivalent equipment as well as small excavation equipment, highway tractors, and general fleet vehicles as required.
    • Must be eligible for and able to obtain Mobile Crane Operator Exemption Permit from the Province of Manitoba as required.
    • Ability to read and understand engineered drawings.
    • Ability to read, understand and follow survey grades and levels.
    • Must be punctual, dependable and safety minded.
    • Ability to communicate using cell phone, two-way radio, telephone and log sheet.
    • Exceptional organizational skills, able to prioritize and time management is required.
    • Ability to understand detailed information is essential.
    • Conscientious about accuracy.
    • Ability to adapt to a changing environment and respond with initiative.
    • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and proven ability to maintain successful working relations at all levels within the organization and with external stakeholders.
    • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions:

  • We have a compressed work week, which consists of a four-day work week and ten hours a day - starting at 6 am.
  • Must possess physical agility necessary to perform all aspects of the work that involves bending, lifting, climbing, and mobility.
  • Must be capable of wearing and working in protective clothing, respirator and using equipment as required.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 35kg (fork extensions, chains, pads, etc).
  • Sitting for long periods of time while operating equipment.
  • Ability to wear and work in a respirator and other protective equipment.
  • Work safely in hazardous situations, i.e., excavations, snow clearing.
  • Must be able to work in extreme outdoor temperatures ranging from +30°C to -40°C.
