Job summary

GFL Environmental Inc. is seeking an Emergency Response Operator to join the Bowmanville team. The role focuses on providing emergency response support and carrying out hazardous materials mitigation, environmental cleanup, and chemical transfer tasks.

The ideal candidate will have post-secondary education and relevant training such as NFPA 472/1001, a valid DZ license, and on-call availability. Strong communication and safety-conscious teamwork are essential in this role.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education or related field preferred.
  • NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials Operations knowledge a plus.
  • NFPA 1001 level 1 or 2 certification sought or equivalent.
  • Valid DZ license with clean driving record required.
  • On-call availability for emergency response.
  • Hazardous materials/environmental experience an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct environmental clean-up activities.
  • Ensure Hazardous-Materials incident mitigation.
  • Perform chemical transfers and technical rescue activities.
  • Participate in standby confined space rescue work.
  • Complete work-related documentation and reporting.
  • Follow OH&S Act and related regulations.

Our Bowmanville GFL Emergency Response division is looking for a new Emergency Response Operator to join its team! We are looking for a responsible and reliable candidate to provide emergency response support for our organization.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct environmental clean-up activities.
  • Ensure Hazardous-Materials incident mitigation.
  • Perform chemical transfers.
  • Perform technical rescue activities.
  • Involvement in chemical firefighting tasks.
  • Provide dangerous goods consulting.
  • Participate in various Industrial services.
  • Responding to various emergencies as requested.
  • Participating in job specific and health & safety training as required.
  • Operating his/her position in an efficient and safe manner.
  • Participating in standby confined space rescue work.
  • Completing work related documentation and reporting.
  • Follow all established organizational policies and procedures.
  • Support the vision and values of the organization.
  • Promote and participate in a work environment free of workplace harassment and violence.
  • Perform work in a safe manner, so as not to endanger oneself or others.
  • Reporting workplace hazards, accidents or other occurrences that may pose a risk to the organization or the safety of oneself or others.
  • Adhere to the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Workplace Safety & Insurance Board Act, Ontario Human Rights Code and Employment Standards Act.
  • Participate in team/staff meetings when required.
  • Work in a manner that preserves confidentiality and minimizes risk.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:
  • Post-secondary education, preferably in a related area of study.
  • Pre-service Fire, Medical, or Police training.
  • NFPA 472 Hazardous Material Operations.
  • NFPA 1001 level 1 or 2.
  • Valid DZ license with a suitable drivers abstract (standard transmission – up to 18 speed).
  • On-call work availability for emergency response.
  • Hazardous materials and/or environmental experience an asset.
  • Vacuum truck experience an asset.
  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Confined space awareness.
  • Reliable means of personal transportation
  • Willingness to work at extreme heights and within confined spaces.
  • Participate in pre-employment and post-incident drug & alcohol testing.
  • Professional and trustworthy, with a customer focus to his/her work.
  • Must be a highly motivated, service and team-oriented individual with a strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Valid Certification in First Aid/CPR (or willingness to obtain).
  • Bilingual English/French or other languages an asset.
