Job summary

RailWorks is seeking an Equipment Mechanic in Abbotsford, BC to perform preventative and corrective maintenance on railway construction equipment and related vehicles. You will work under the Equipment Manager/Shop Foreman with shifts adjusting after probation.

Candidates must reside in Abbotsford or relocate before starting. Typical duties include wrenching, inspections, repairs, and equipment operation in varied weather and job sites.

Qualifications

  • Apprentice/Red Seal status or equivalent required.
  • Experience performing field service tasks in a heavy equipment environment.
  • Railway industry experience or related heavy-duty asset experience preferred.
  • Own personal tools required for work on site and in shop.
  • Class 5 (or higher) driver's license is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Interpret blueprints, service manuals and schematics to diagnose issues.
  • Inspect, test, and repair parts with limited resources on remote job sites.
  • Fabricate and repair using cutting torches and welding (stick and MIG).
  • Utilize hand and power tools and operate cranes and forklifts as needed.
  • Diagnose problems and take corrective action to minimize downtime.
  • Maintain equipment maintenance records and time sheets.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Equipment Manager/Shop Foreman, the Mechanic performs duties and tasks related to the preventative and corrective maintenance of specialized railway construction equipment and other related construction equipment and vehicles. Working hours during the probation period will be straight day shift once the probation period ends the working hours will change based on business needs these positions are not for day shift only.

Candidates must live in the Abbottsford, B.C. area or be willing to relocate before starting the position.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance of all systems associated with work equipment (mechanical, electrical and hydraulic)
  • Work from blueprints, service manuals and schematic drawings
  • Conduct inspections and tests, repair or replace parts with limited resources in remote locations outdoors in all types of weather conditions
  • Evaluate parts for reuse, repair or replacement
  • Use of cutting torches and welder to perform various fabrication tasks, comfortable using both stick and mig welding applications
  • Use various hand and power hand tools
  • Operates equipment such as overhead or mobile cranes and forklifts to assist in assignments
  • Diagnose equipment problems and take corrective action in order to minimize the impact on crew production
  • Adapts to new methods, processes, material and equipment
  • Prepare and submit equipment maintenance records, time sheets, etc.
  • Follows prescribed safety procedures including the use of safety clothing and equipment
  • Ensures cleanliness and organization of shop, maintenance of shop tools and equipment, loading/unloading and storage of equipment, etc.
  • Working on heavy duty equipment such as Excavators and Backhoes
  • Assists other Heavy Duty Mechanics when needed
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • level 3 Apprentice to red seal Mechanic
  • Previous field service experience
  • related railway experience and /or related heavy-duty asset.
  • Own tools required
  • class 5 or higher driver's license, an asset
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Works both outdoors at construction sites and in the shop
  • Frequently stands, walks, climbs, balances, lifts, bends, and moves objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Exposed to all weather conditions including very hot and very cold weather.
  • Exposed to loud noise.
  • Exposed to live track/trains and high voltage.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts
  • Working with multiples tools
  • Comfortable sitting for an extended period of time traveling to the job site
