Job summary

PNR RailWorks is seeking a Mechanic in British Columbia to oversee preventative and corrective maintenance of specialized railway construction equipment. You may start on a day shift during probation, with shifts changing after probation based on business needs.

Residents of Abbotsford, BC or relocation before starting are required. The role involves working with mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems, reading schematics, and performing fabrication tasks with welding.

Qualifications

  • Level 3 Apprentice to Red Seal Mechanic
  • Previous field service experience
  • Related railway experience and/or related heavy‑duty asset
  • Own required tools
  • Class 5 driver’s license, an asset

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance of all systems associated with work equipment (mechanical, electrical and hydraulic)
  • Work from blueprints, service manuals and schematic drawings
  • Conduct inspections and tests, repair or replace parts with limited resources in remote locations outdoors in all types of weather conditions
  • Evaluate parts for reuse, repair or replacement
  • Use of cutting torches and welding to perform various fabrication tasks, comfortable using both stick and MIG welding applications
  • Use various hand and power hand tools
  • Operate equipment such as overhead or mobile cranes and forklifts to assist in assignments
  • Diagnose equipment problems and take corrective action to minimize the impact on crew production
  • Adapt to new methods, processes, materials and equipment
  • Prepare and submit equipment maintenance records, time sheets, etc.
  • Follow prescribed safety procedures including the use of safety clothing and equipment
  • Ensure cleanliness and organization of shop, maintenance of shop tools and equipment, loading/unloading and storage of equipment, etc.
  • Work on heavy duty equipment such as excavators and backhoes
  • Assist other heavy duty mechanics when needed

Compensation

Pay rate: $37-46.92/hour depending on experience

Position Summary

Reporting to the Equipment Manager/Shop Foreman, the Mechanic performs duties and tasks related to the preventative and corrective maintenance of specialized railway construction equipment and other related construction equipment and vehicles. Working hours during the probation period will be straight day shift; once the probation period ends the working hours will change based on business needs. These positions are not for day shift only.

Candidates must live in the Abbottsford, B.C. area or be willing to relocate before starting the position.

Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Level 3 Apprentice to Red Seal Mechanic
  • Previous field service experience

  • Class 5 or higher driver’s license, an asset
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Work both outdoors at construction sites and in the shop
  • Frequently stand, walk, climb, balance, lift, bend, and move objects up to 50 pounds
  • Exposed to all weather conditions including very hot and very cold weather
  • Exposed to loud noise
  • Exposed to live track/trains and high voltage
  • Ability to work rotating shifts
  • Work with multiple tools
  • Comfortable sitting for an extended period of time traveling to the job site
