Job summary

NVT, based in Fort St. John, BC, is seeking a Heavy-Duty Mechanic to perform repairs and preventive maintenance, track records, and manage parts inventory to keep the fleet in peak condition.

You will diagnose equipment, service major assemblies, and coordinate with management to maximize uptime while maintaining safety and quality. Expect 10–12 hour days on a set shift with growth opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Journeyman Heavy-Duty Mechanic Ticket required.
  • NVT heavy-equipment experience preferred; strong diagnostic skills.
  • Commitment to safety and quality workmanship.
  • Ability to maintain accurate service records.

Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections and preventive maintenance on equipment and fleet.
  • Adjust and align components to manufacturer specs.
  • Maintain up-to-date service records and inventory.
  • Diagnose vehicles by inspection and testing.
  • Repair major assemblies and systems including power, hydraulic, electrical, and braking subsystems.
  • Test drive and verify vehicle performance.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and provincial requirements.
  • Keep the shop organized and clean.
  • Manage parts and warranty options to control costs.
  • Pursue learning and value-added improvements.

Job description

Based in Fort St. John, BC and reporting directly into the General Manager, the Heavy-Duty Mechanic will be responsible for performing repairs and maintenance, tracking maintenance records, managing inventory for parts and supplies, coordinating repair schedules, and ensuring the safe running order of the equipment fleet. The Heavy-Duty Mechanic will work hand in hand with other mechanics and management in Fort St. John to ensure proper scheduling and maximum uptime. This position requires a self-motivated individual capable of maintaining their own shop and schedule.

Job Responsibilities
  • Completing equipment inspections and preventive maintenance requirements.
  • Adjusting and alignments.
  • Maintaining up-to-date records.
  • Mechanic Job Duties.
  • Determine vehicle condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests.
  • Identify worn and damaged parts.
  • Ensure equipment availability by completing scheduled preventive maintenance schedules; installing the component and part upgrades; controlling corrosion; completing winterization procedures.
  • Corrects vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics; completes machine shop operations; making adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and traction units.
  • Verifies vehicle performance by conducting test drives; adjusting controls and systems.
  • Complies with federal and provincial vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards.
  • Maintains shop appearance by cleaning and washing.
  • Maintains vehicle records by annotating services and repairs.
  • Keeps shop equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
  • Contains costs by using the warranty, evaluating service and parts options.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical and regulation publications.
  • Enhances maintenance department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests, exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
