Frontiers North Adventures in Churchill, Manitoba, is seeking a Heavy Duty Mechanic for the autumn polar bear season to inspect, diagnose, repair and maintain our fleet and the Tundra Buggy Lodge systems.

You will work on diesel engines, hydraulics and electrical systems, performing preventative maintenance and field diagnostics in subarctic conditions. The role is based in Churchill and requires safety‑conscious, physically capable applicants with relevant licenses.

Qualifications

• Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Truck and Transport Mechanic.
• Journeyperson certification (Red Seal preferred) in Heavy Duty Equipment Technician or Truck and Transport Mechanic.
• Valid Class 2 driver's licence (buses, 24+ capacity) is required or must be obtained.
• Valid Class 1 driver's licence is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, braking, steering, suspension, and drivetrain systems across our fleet.
• Troubleshoot diesel engine fault codes, heavy-duty transmissions, transfer cases, and drive axles.
• Perform preventative maintenance, tune-ups, and pre-season overhauls per manufacturer specs.
• Service and repair Tundra Buggy systems and auxiliary hydraulic drives.
• Maintain generators, heating, water, and waste systems for the Lodge.
• Winterize fleet vehicles for subarctic conditions and respond to field service calls.
• Provide technical guidance to Shop Assistants and other coworkers.
• Maintain maintenance records and work orders; follow safety policies.

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are hiring a Heavy Duty Mechanic to join our Garage and Fleet team in Churchill for the autumn polar bear season (October and November). In this role, you will inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair our fleet and specialized equipment, including Tundra Buggies, passenger and service vehicles, and the mechanical systems supporting the Tundra Buggy Lodge. You will help ensure our vehicles and equipment are safe, reliable, and ready to deliver an unforgettable guest experience in subarctic conditions.

This is a seasonal, term position based in the remote community of Churchill, Manitoba, accessible only by rail or plane.

What You Will Do

• Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, braking, steering, suspension, and drivetrain systems across our fleet.
• Troubleshoot diesel engine fault codes, heavy-duty transmissions, transfer cases, and drive axles.
• Perform preventative maintenance, tune-ups, and pre-season overhauls in accordance with manufacturer and operational requirements.
• Service and repair specialized Tundra Buggy systems, including custom wide-track wheel assemblies, high-clearance subframes, and auxiliary hydraulic drives.
• Maintain generators, heating, water, and waste systems supporting the Tundra Buggy Lodge.
• Winterize fleet vehicles and equipment for extreme subarctic conditions.
• Respond to field service calls and perform diagnostics and repairs at remote locations during active tour operations.
• Complete required inspections in accordance with applicable Manitoba transportation requirements and company safety standards.
• Provide technical guidance to Shop Assistants and less experienced coworkers.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records and work orders.
• Follow the Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act and Regulation, along with all company health and safety policies, including WHMIS, lockout and tagout, and PPE requirements.

What You Bring

Required Education and Certifications

• Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Truck and Transport Mechanic, or an acceptable combination of education and experience.
• Journeyperson certification (Red Seal preferred) in Heavy Duty Equipment Technician or Truck and Transport Mechanic.
• Valid Class 2 driver's licence (buses, 24-plus capacity) is required or must be obtained as a condition of employment.
• Valid Class 1 driver's licence (semi-trailer trucks) is an asset.

Experience

• Extensive hands-on experience with diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
• Experience maintaining heavy equipment in remote or extreme environments.
• Supervisory or lead hand experience in a shop setting is an asset.

Skills and Abilities

• Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills across a diverse fleet in time-sensitive situations.
• Sound decision-making under pressure in a remote, resource-limited environment.
• Effective communication skills in English; other languages are an asset.
• Proficiency with office applications (Google Workspace) is an asset.

WORKING IN CHURCHILL

This position is based in Churchill, a small subarctic community accessible only by rail or plane, where daily life and operations are shaped by the season. Work takes place in and around our garage, yard, and outdoor sites, with exposure to cold, wind, snow, and variable terrain.

The role is physically demanding and may require standing or walking for extended periods, lifting up to 50 pounds (22.68 kilograms), and working in confined or awkward spaces. CSA-approved steel-toed work boots and other required PPE must be worn on the job.

Regular hours are based on a 40-hour workweek; however, scheduled hours may vary, and evenings, weekends, and additional hours may be required to meet the demands of a busy operating season.
