Detailed Overview

Under the general supervision of the Nursing Supervisor, the Health Unit Aide assists Public Health Nurses in a variety of support and service areas such as organizing and setting up immunization clinics; distribution of supplies for needle exchange programs; maintaining and distributing the Unit's biological supply; conducting hearing and vision screening, maintaining and cleaning a variety of supplies and equipment and performs related clerical duties such as charting and collecting data, creates spreadsheets, data entry, word processing, filing and photocopying.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinates, organizes and/or conducts hearing and vision screening in various locations; records results of screening and makes referrals as per protocols.
  • Sets up immunization clinics; maintains supply of biologicals by monitoring stock levels, compiling biological/drug orders for clinics and general practitioners, distributing biologicals, lab supplies and pamphlets, and ensuring refrigeration and transport temperatures are maintained.
  • Maintains inventories of supplies and equipment by performing duties such as monitoring inventory levels, identifying requirements, processing orders, and receiving, verifying, documenting, distributing, and storing shipments.
  • Cleans and sterilizes equipment and supplies in accordance with established procedures by performing duties such as preparing and changing solutions, washing and drying supplies, preparing and wrapping supplies for autoclaving.
  • Prepares equipment and supply bags by cleaning and stocking as required.
  • Provides support in clinical settings by performing duties such as setting up, dismantling and cleaning rooms, weighing and measuring babies, calibrating and cleaning equipment, distribution of needle exchange supplies as per protocol.
  • Performs administrative support duties such as photocopying, booking clients for appointments, answering phones, assembling and maintaining files, packaging items for shipment, organizing and renewing pamphlets, marking new equipment.
  • Performs word processing and data entry functions such as correspondence, statistical data, client records maintenance, copy or general instruction by using software applications such as Word, Excel, graphics and databases; drafts correspondence for review and signature; signs correspondence for standard responses, as required.
  • Delivers and disposes of supplies, biologicals, materials, and equipment by performing duties such as packaging, making arrangements for pickup and delivery, and transporting.
  • Maintains department resources by performing duties such as logging materials out, tracking loans, maintaining booking schedules and arranging maintenance of equipment.
  • Maintains a petty cash account, receives payments and issues receipts as required.
  • Provides direction to volunteers, and monitors and assists as required.
  • Performs other related duties, as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience

Grade twelve (12), Medical Office Assistant Certificate, plus one (1) year's recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Valid Class V B.C. Driver's Licence and possession of a personal vehicle.
