Job summary

The City of Markham is seeking an experienced Health & Safety Coordinator to support the development, implementation and ongoing improvement of the city’s health and safety programs. You will partner with People Services, city leaders, and JHSCs to drive proactive safety, incident prevention, and training across sites.

Responsibilities include compliance with OHSA/WSIA, hazard assessments, investigations, and safety training delivery, with a focus on prevention, risk reduction, and employee

Qualifications

  • Health and safety diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive OH&S experience.
  • Experience in municipal sector, construction, or unionized public sector.
  • Experience leading inspections, audits, and investigations.
  • Experience supporting multi-site Joint Health & Safety Committees.
  • Developing and delivering health and safety training programs.
  • WSIB claims management and return-to-work coordination.
  • Support safety on construction or capital projects.
  • Strong knowledge of Ontario health and safety legislation.
  • Strong knowledge of OHSA and applicable regulations.
  • Knowledge of WSIA and return-to-work practices.
  • Knowledge of the Human Rights Code and duty to accommodate.
  • Ability to translate legislation into practical solutions.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to influence and support leaders and employees in a unionized setting.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver's license with travel to multiple sites.
  • First Aid and CPR Level C training.

Responsibilities

  • Support development and improvement of safety programs and policies.
  • Ensure OHSA/WSIA compliance across operations.
  • Coordinate inspections, hazard assessments, and safety training.
  • Lead investigations of incidents and implement corrective actions.
  • Support leadership to verify contractor compliance with safety expectations.
  • Coordinate occupational hygiene and exposure monitoring initiatives.
  • Promote safety culture through engagement and trainings.
  • Prepare reports and dashboards to support decision-making.

KeyDuties&Responsibilities
Health&SafetyCompliance
  • Supportthedevelopment,implementation,review,andcontinuousimprovementoftheCity’shealthandsafetyprograms,policies,procedures,standards,andsafeworkpractices.
  • ContributetotheevolutionoftheCity’shealthandsafetymanagementsystemandoverallsafetystrategy.
  • EnsureorganizationalcompliancewiththeOccupationalHealthandSafetyAct(OHSA),WorkplaceSafetyandInsuranceAct(WSIA),andrelatedlegislation.
  • Coordinateandsupporthealthandsafetyprograms,includingworkplaceinspections,hazardassessments,contractorsafety,confinedspaceentry,workplaceviolenceprevention,andfirstaidcompliance.
  • ConductcomplianceauditsandgapassessmentstoensureadherencetoOHSA,applicableregulations,standards,andcorporaterequirements.
  • Monitorlegislativechanges,emergingtrends,andbestpractices,recommendingprogramenhancementstomaintaincomplianceandsupportcontinuousimprovement.
RiskManagement&IncidentPrevention(Operational)
  • Conductworkplaceinspections,audits,hazardassessments,andjobhazardanalysesacrossmunicipalfacilities,operationalworksites,andactiveproject/constructionsites.
