Job summary

London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) is seeking a Health Information Coder to classify diseases and interventions following CIHI and MoHLTC standards. You will translate clinical documentation into standardized codes for CIHI submission and funding purposes.

The role emphasizes accuracy, confidentiality and knowledge of CCS, DAD, NACRS, and AJCC, with remote work potential and opportunities across LHSC sites. You will collaborate with HIM teams to support patient care data quality.

Qualifications

• Two-year diploma in Health Information Management is required.
• Currently CHIMA certified in good standing.
• Up to one year of related work experience; inpatient coding preferred.

Job Summary

Health Information Management

The Health Information Coder is responsible for the coding and classification of all diseases and interventions for inpatient, one day stay, emergency and outpatient encounters, in accordance with the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) standards and Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MoHLTC) requirements.

The Health Information Coder utilizes the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision, Canada (ICD-10-CA) and the Canadian Classification of Health Interventions (CCI), Canadian Coding Standards (CCS), DAD and NACRS Abstracting manuals, and the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) Cancer Staging System.

The Health Information Coder translates clinical documentation into standardized alphanumeric codes which is submitted to CIHI and the MoHLTC for funding and resource allocation. Coded data captures resources and complexity and the true acuity of our patient population.

What You Will Bring

• Successful completion of a two (2) year diploma in Health Information Management required
• Currently Certified in good standing with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) required
• Minimum up to one-year recent related job experience
• Recent inpatient coding experience preferred
• Demonstrated detailed knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology and medical terminology
• Handle and maintain patient information confidentially according to LHSC policies, privacy and legal requirements
• Meticulous accuracy and attention to detail
• Methodical understanding of CIHI indices and comparative reports
• Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology and medical terminology
• Skilled knowledge of Canadian Coding Standards (CCS), Discharge Abstract Database (DAD), National Ambulatory Care Reporting System (NACRS), and American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) abstracting manuals
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
• Proficient with Cerner and PowerChart preferred
• Advanced knowledge of 3M Health Data Management (HDM) abstracting system, Codefinder software and CIHI Folio Views (ICD-10-CA, CCI) preferred
• Thorough understanding of the complicated funding formulas involving QBPs, HIG/CMG, CACS, RIW, preferred
• Basic knowledge of 3M Report Writer and Clinical Documentation Improvement Software preferred
• Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
• Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety at LHSC
• Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC's vision, purpose and values
• Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
