Description

The Health and Safety Specialist will report to the Health and Safety Senior Advisor and be a trusted advisor and partner; they will support the execution of Purolator's health and safety programs in Quebec.

Responsibilities
  • Apply the principles of continuous improvement in the establishment and instill a robust safety culture.
  • Actively promote a healthy workplace, free from violence and harassment.
  • Collaborate with the Environment, Health and Safety Department team and with partners to reduce the frequency of injuries.
  • Inform, consult and influence management regarding unique security requirements that impact decisions, business unit operations, systems and procedures.
  • Work directly with Unit Managers and District Managers to implement and ensure enforcement of health and safety operating procedures.
  • Monitor, review and produce monthly reports on health and safety performance measurement indicators and indices.
  • Contribute to or lead incident investigations using our Cority program by performing root cause assessment and analysis, determining corrective actions and ensuring required follow-up is completed for incidents.
  • Support Purolator's return to work program.
  • Support the environmental, health and safety external audit process (identify safety risks, cases of non-compliance, provide recommendations and programs to mitigate compliance gaps, etc.).
  • Ensure the integration of health and safety measures into all new processes, equipment and employment contracts.
  • Provide health and safety coaching to front-line managers to better assign safe work before the shift (integrate the safety conversation into work assignment). Complete, establish and maintain records for evaluations.
  • Ensure proper record keeping in each depot, depending on location.
  • Act as a facilitator and ensure follow-up at the local level in order to better understand, monitor and complete health and safety measures.
  • Act as a facilitator in incident investigations and ensure that investigations are started and completed within a reasonable time frame, with concrete corrective actions followed up to turn the page and ensure sustainability.
  • Coach and train front-line managers on incident investigations.
  • Participate in local safety visits, document and monitor completion actions.
  • Implement safety observation and intervention programs.
  • Contribute to the implementation of new health and safety procedures and standards.
  • Participate in or lead job risk analysis sessions and reviews (within health and safety committees or independently).
  • Provide technical safety advice to local health and safety committees.
  • Participate in and complete local health and safety inspections.
  • Act as a workplace health and safety trainer.
  • Collaborate with transportation security and dangerous goods teams to support their activities.
Education

The successful candidate must have:

  • Diploma of at least two years in occupational health and safety.
  • 1 year of experience in the field of occupational health and safety (or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience).
Experience
  • Knows the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Canada Labor Code, Part 2, and provincial health and safety laws.
  • Experience in road safety, an asset.
  • Transportation Security Compliance Exposure.
  • Understands the principles of risk management and loss control and has experience applying these principles.
  • Proven ability to effectively influence peers (unit leaders) and front-line employees.
  • Possesses excellent organizational skills to plan, monitor and adapt to dynamic operating issues and a rapidly changing environment.
  • Demonstrates autonomy and motivation, demonstrates a high level of professionalism, ethics, confidence and willingness to work as a team. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Has excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to travel regionally to different facilities.
  • Has a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to work outside of non-traditional hours (evenings, weekends, holidays, etc.).
