Job summary

YMCA of Northeastern Ontario in Sudbury's Durham location is seeking a Head Lifeguard/Instructor for a part-time role. You will lead aquatic staff, ensure safety, and uphold YMCA standards in daily pool operations.

The ideal candidate has NL certification, YMCA Swim Instructor Certification, and a valid First Aid/CPR C, plus leadership experience. We offer flexible hours, free membership, and a supportive team. This role emphasizes program quality and community wellbeing.

Qualifications

  • OSSD preferred.
  • National Lifeguard certification (NL) in good standing is required.
  • YMCA Swim Instructor Certification is required.
  • Lifesaving Society Instructor is an asset.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR C are required.
  • Police Record with Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety of patrons at all times.
  • Provide leadership on the pool deck during aquatic programs and manage routine tasks.
  • Respond to inquiries regarding programs promptly.
  • Be a positive role model for all program participants.
  • Lead emergency/incident response on the pool deck as required.
  • Coordinate swim lesson attendance and staffing.
  • Communicate with program guardians.
  • Recommend policy and process improvements within the department.
  • Complete incident reports for supervisor review.
  • Maintain pool logs and swim lesson progress reports.
  • Coordinate staff for daily cleaning tasks.
  • Maintain a clean, welcoming environment and uphold Y Way Standards.
  • Build relationships with members and promote YMCA as a charitable organization.

We are currently looking for Head Lifeguard/Instructor to join our team of committed professionals. This Part-Time position within the Association is housed at the YMCA of Northeastern Ontario’s Durham location in Sudbury.

Under the leadership of the Supervisor, Aquatics, the Head Lifeguard/Instructor provides on deck leadership and support to aquatic staff, ensures safe and effective daily operations on the pool deck, and upholds YMCA policies, procedures, and standards to deliver high-quality aquatic experiences and ensure participant satisfaction.

  • START DATE: As Soon As Possible
  • LOCATION: Durham, Sudbury
  • RATE OF PAY: $19.23/ Hourly
  • HOURS: 4-10 Hours / Weekly
What You'll Do
  • Ensure the safety of patrons at all times
  • Provide leadership on the pool deck during the aquatic program schedule including regular tasks like water tests, slide operation and swim level assessments
  • Respond to inquiries regarding programs promptly
  • Be a positive role model for all program participants
  • Lead emergency/incident response on the pool deck as required
  • Coordinate swim lesson attendance lists and staffing
  • Communication with program participant guardians
  • Provide recommendations regarding policy, procedures and process development within the department
  • Complete incident reports for submission to the supervisor
  • Complete pool logs
  • Accept and approve swim lesson progress reports
  • Coordinate staff to complete daily cleaning tasks
  • Maintain a clean and welcoming environment Incorporate Y Way Standards into daily responsibilities
  • Build relationships with members and guests, and promote the YMCA as a charitable organization
What You'll Bring
  • Possession of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) preferred
  • National Lifeguard certification (NL in good standing)
  • YMCA Swim Instructor Certification
  • Lifesaving Society Instructor and/or examiner considered an asset
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a leadership role
  • Advanced computer skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR C
  • Current and satisfactory Police Record with Vulnerable Sector Check
