Job summary

YMCA of Simcoe Muskoka in Midland is seeking a Full-time Lifeguard/ Swim Instructor to join our aquatics team. You will deliver swimming lessons, ensure safety, and foster a welcoming, inclusive environment for members and participants.

The role requires lifeguard certification, CPR C, standard First Aid, and YMCA/Red Cross instructor credentials; training and certification updates are part of the job. Flexibility for evenings and weekends is expected.

Qualifications

• Must hold National Lifeguard Program Award, Standard First Aid & CPR C.
• YMCA/Red Cross Swim Instructor certification required.
• WHMIS certification an asset.
• 1–3 months lifeguarding and swim instruction experience preferred.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to engage with diverse participants.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate support to members, facility users and program participants.
• Provide instructional swimming lessons to various age groups per curriculum.
• Plan, organize and implement core/daily lesson plans and evaluations.
• Maintain progress sheets, records and Daily Log up to date.
• Set up and take down equipment; ensure safety and report malfunctions.
• Complete safety checks of lifesaving equipment prior to shifts.
• Assist staff with pool and equipment cleaning duties.
• Uphold YMCA values and adopt a member-focused approach.
• Be flexible with hours; include early mornings, days, evenings and weekends.
• Complete required trainings before/after start: AODA, Health & Safety, Bill 168, PCI, WHMIS, Child Safeguarding.

Job description

The opportunity:

The YMCA of Simcoe Muskoka is looking for a Full-time Lifeguard/ Swim Instructor in Midland. If you're looking for rewarding role in aquatics, this position is for you. As a key member of our aquatics team, you'll be working alongside awesome colleagues to create a top-notch experience in all our Aquatic Program spaces. Safety is our priority, and you'll play a vital role in the smooth and secure operation of our programs.

In this role, you will:

• Demonstrate strong support and commitment to serving the membership, facility users and all program participants of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka.
• Provide instructional swimming lessons to various age groups following established curriculum.
• Plan, organize and implement core lesson plans/daily lesson plans, progress reports and evaluations.
• Maintain accurate, up to date progress sheets and records for participants; keep Daily Log up to date and accurate.
• Set up and take down recreational, program and other equipment as required – at the same time checking that equipment is safe and in good repair (reporting immediately all malfunctions and removing the damaged equipment immediately from circulation).
• Complete a safety check of lifesaving equipment prior to each shift.
• Assist staff team in some cleaning duties related to pool and equipment.
• Demonstrate appropriate behaviours in line with our Mission, Vision and Values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; takes a member focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the Association.
• Understand the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrate the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members, volunteers, donors and staff.
• Adhere to all provincial and federal legislation relevant to job description.
• Be wiling to work a flexible work week including days, evenings and weekends.

You bring:

• National Lifeguard Program Award
• Standard First Aid & CPR “C”
• YMCA and/or Red Cross / Swim Instructor certification
• YMCA Aquatic Fitness Certification or equivalent an asset
• Current WHMIS certification an asset
• One to three months of previous experience in lifeguarding and swim instruction an asset
• Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers
• Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
• Flexibility regarding assigned hours of work, including early mornings, days, evenings and weekends
• Willingness to participate in mandated training to be completed before or shortly after commencement of work including:
  • AODA Training
  • Health & Safety Awareness Training
  • Bill 168 (Violence & Harassment in the Workplace) Training
  • PCI Compliance
  • WHMIS
  • Child Safeguarding Training
