Job summary

'Namgis First Nation is seeking a Guardian for Forestry/Archaeology under the Forester. You will handle field activities related to archaeological surveys, forestry field surveys, and CHR assessments.

Under the Forester's direction, you will support forestry surveys, participate in archaeology fieldwork with Namgis archaeologists, document field observations, and help with training and gear maintenance. Work involves travel to remote sites and irregular hours.

Qualifications

• Ability to work safely in field conditions and remote sites.
• Record field data using tablets and keep accurate notes.
• Experience with forestry/archaeology field surveys preferred.
• Knowledge of Namgis culture is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Represent Namgis to members and external partners.
• Assist CHR assessments of forestry cut-blocks before harvest/road work.
• Record field observations including plant occurrences and distributions.
• Participate in forestry surveys (cut-block layout, streams, post-harvest) and silviculture tasks.
• Assist Archaeological Assessments with Namgis archaeologists on site.
• Assist in other Archaeological Assessments in Namgis territory as needed.
• Document cultural resources and maintain equipment.
• Support training for new staff.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Forester, the Guardian - Forestry/Arch will be responsible for field activities related to 'Namgis Archaeological Surveys, Forestry Field Surveys, and Archaeological Surveys.

Specific Responsibilities

• Positively represent 'Namgis to members and the outside world in all aspects of their duties
• Participate in Cultural Heritage Resource (CHR) Assessments of forestry cut-blocks prior to harvest and road building activities.
• Keep accurate, legible records of all field activities including plant occurrences and distribution and other non-timber observations.
• Participate in forestry surveys associated with timber harvesting (ie: cut-block layout, stream assessment, karst surveys, post-harvest assessments, planting checks, and silviculture surveys).
• Participate in Archaeological Assessments with 'Namgis Archaeologists, including digging, sifting, packing heavy equipment, shoveling, and other related activities.
• Represent 'Namgis on other Archaeological Assessments in 'Namgis territory for other proponents as needed.
• Participate in the recording and documentation of cultural natural resources of interest to 'Namgis members.
• Related office activities as needed.
• Care and repair personal gear.
• Safe operation and maintenance of equipment including vessels, all-terrain vehicles, trucks, trailers, etc.
• Undertake training as assigned.
• Support new/temporary staff.
• Other duties are as required by the Natural Resources Director, and/or the Administrator.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner.
• Ability to take notes/photos and collect other data using tablets.
• Ability to work in challenging and remote wilderness environments.
• Ability to understand and follow instructions from CMT Crew Lead.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated competency in field knowledge (compassing, map reading etc).
• Proficiency with VHF radio communication and protocols.
• Knowledge of 'Namgis culture.

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS

• Resources Information Standards Committee Archaeological and CMT Inventory Training for Crew Members (RISC)
• Grade 12 or equivalent
• Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License
• Basic First Aid
