Job summary

Na̱mǥis First Nation in Alert Bay, BC is seeking an NRD Maintenance Worker to inspect, maintain and repair nation-owned vehicles, vessels, trailers, equipment, buildings and remote infrastructure under the Director of Natural Resources.

You will coordinate repairs with qualified contractors, keep maintenance records, ensure safety standards, assist with budgeting and perform general building upkeep in marine, wilderness and remote environments.

Qualifications

Job Title: NRD Maintenance Worker

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Director of Natural Resources, the Maintenance Worker is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and coordinating repairs for Nation-owned vehicles, vessels, trailers, equipment, buildings, and remote infrastructure. The position supports the safe and reliable operation of Nation assets through preventative maintenance, routine repairs, contractor coordination, and facility upkeep.

Specific Responsibilities

• Positively represent the Nation to members, contractors, government agencies, and the public in all activities.
• Conduct routine inspections of Nation-owned vehicles, vessels, trailers, machinery, facilities, and infrastructure.
• Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on:
  • Pickup trucks, SUVs, and fleet vehicles
  • Boats and marine vessels
  • Boat trailers
  • Small equipment and machinery, including tractors, mowers, generators, pumps, chainsaws, and Kubota equipment
• Coordinate and arrange repairs with qualified contractors, mechanics, marine service providers, and tradespeople when specialized work is required.
• Maintain maintenance records, service schedules, inspection reports, and equipment inventories.
• Ensure all vehicles, vessels, equipment, and facilities meet safety standards and operational requirements.
• Assist with budgeting and procurement of maintenance supplies, parts, and equipment.
• Conduct general building maintenance, including:
  • Minor carpentry
  • Painting
  • Plumbing repairs
  • Electrical troubleshooting within training and certification limits
  • Facility inspections and upkeep
• Maintain Nation-owned infrastructure, including:
  • Cabins
  • Docks and floats
  • Storage facilities
  • Remote camps
  • Trails and access routes
• Assist with seasonal preparations, including winterization, de-winterization, storm response, and emergency repairs.
• Operate tools and equipment safely and maintain them in good working condition.
• Coordinate transportation of equipment, supplies, and materials to remote worksites.
• Support emergency response activities related to facilities, infrastructure, or equipment failures.
• Other duties as assigned by the Director of Operations and/or Administration.

Skills & Experience Requirements

• Demonstrated experience in facility, equipment, vehicle, or infrastructure maintenance.
• Working knowledge of mechanical systems and preventative maintenance practices.
• Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot equipment and facility issues.
• Experience operating and maintaining small equipment and machinery.
• Familiarity with marine equipment and vessels is considered an asset.
• Ability to coordinate contractors and service providers effectively.
• Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and electronic record-keeping.
• Knowledge of local Indigenous culture and territory is considered an asset.

Education/Qualifications

• Grade 12 or equivalent preferred.
• Valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence.
• Occupational First Aid Level 1 (or equivalent) or the ability to obtain.
• WHMIS certification or the ability to obtain.Chainsaw Safety Certification is considered an asset.
• Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP).
• Equipment operation certifications are considered an asset.

Other Job Features

• Regular outdoor work in all weather conditions.
• Frequent travel by vehicle, vessel, ferry, and other means to remote work locations.
• Work may occur in marine, wilderness, and isolated environments.
• Duties involve moderate to strenuous physical labour, including heavy lifting, carrying, climbing, and working on uneven terrain.
• Irregular work hours may occasionally be required, including evenings, weekends, and emergency call-outs.
• Exposure to mechanical, marine, and construction-related hazards requires adherence to safety procedures and the use of personal protective equipment.
