Group Manager, Senior Metallurgist, Laboratory Testing - Minerals

Job Description

Our Metallurgy & Consulting group seeks a Group Manager with strong leadership skills and technical expertise. SGS provides laboratory testing services for the mining sector. The role involves managing professionals conducting metallurgical testing (bench-scale and pilot-scale) across various commodities, including base metals, precious metals, platinum group elements, critical minerals, bulk commodities, and recycling materials.

  • People Management
    • Lead, organize, and motivate staff; oversee training and development.
    • Set goals, review performance, and identify training needs annually.
    • Mentor staff; ensure effective training programs in quality, technical skills, and performance.
    • Identify and develop potential backups.
    • Manage and support the technical team, leveraging strengths and addressing weaknesses.
  • Staffing & Resource Optimization
    • Adjust staffing levels and shifts to meet SGS standards for production, quality, and financial goals.
    • Monitor performance; approve overtime and additional staffing based on workload and budget.
    • Drive recruitment efforts, aiming to increase staff by over 25%.
    • Communicate hiring needs to senior management.
  • Business Development
    • Develop strategic vision collaboratively with senior management.
    • Create division strategies focusing on growth initiatives.
    • Support global expansion strategies.
    • Manage financial performance, sustain existing business, and foster growth.
    • Oversee a multi-million-dollar budget with a 10% annual growth target.
    • Secure resources and manage capital for business goals.
  • Client Engagement & Performance Delivery
    • Meet customer expectations.
    • Ensure timely delivery of testwork to satisfy clients.
    • Monitor weekly production status to meet targets.
    • Demonstrate business development skills and interpersonal effectiveness.
  • Operational Requirements, Compliance & Quality Assurance
    • Travel, consulting, ad hoc projects, and extended hours may be required.
    • Ensure data quality, methodologies, and execution align with accreditation standards.
    • Implement health, safety, and compliance standards.

Qualifications

  • University degree (Bachelor’s or higher) in Chemical Engineering, Mineral Processing, Metallurgy, Hydrometallurgy, Mining Engineering, or related fields.
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience in the minerals industry or equivalent combination of education and industrial experience.
  • Experience in metallurgical testwork, flowsheet development, laboratory, and pilot plant programs.
  • Excellent English skills; French is a plus.
  • Ability to write detailed technical reports.
  • Proven strategic vision and project management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and lead technical teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-motivated, capable of multitasking.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and project management software (e.g., MS Project).
