Job description

Purpose/Summary

We are looking for a Glass Research Scientist or Engineer to join our innovative team. In this role, you will leverage your expertise in glass science and materials engineering to drive the development of advanced glass products and processes. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance product performance, optimize manufacturing processes, and contribute to cutting-edge research in glass technology.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and development activities to innovate and improve glass formulations and processing methods.
  • Develop and implement testing protocols to assess the chemical durability (dissolution) properties of glass materials, with some thermal and mechanical property testing
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data using statistical tools and software to inform material selection, process optimization, design choices and product specifications.
  • Provide technical expertise and recommendations to manufacturing teams to design and build manufacturing equipment and processes, while optimizing production efficiency and quality.
  • Hands-on creation and problem-solving to develop proof-of-concept prototypes. Must be comfortable with working and modifying machine and manufacturing processes on the fly.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of experiments and results, contributing to technical reports and presentations.
  • Collaborate with product development teams to ensure that glass properties meet performance requirements for various applications.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary research and development projects working with fabrication experts, horticulturists, agronomists, engineers or other professionals
  • Engage in continuous learning and professional development, staying current with industry trends and advancements in glass science

Preferred Requirements:

  • A background in chemistry or chemical-related field is preferred, to overlap with our other product lines
  • Act as technical consultant in a particular field of expertise
  • May participate in the commercialization of new products
  • May supervise and mentor other chemists and chemical technicians and technologists.
  • Contribute to the development of intellectual property strategies, including patent applications and publications, to establish Genics as a leader in glass science.

Requirements:

  • Undergraduate in Glass Science or Ceramics, or Masters or PhD in Materials Science or Materials Engineering or relevant degree with a focus on Glass Science
  • Foundational knowledge of glass formulation and processing techniques; Familiarity with manufacturing processes like glass blowing, molding, casting and fiberizing.
  • Basic understanding of glass science principles and materials characterization techniques.
  • Experience with laboratory equipment and techniques, including sample preparation, dissolution experiments, spectroscopy, and microscopy.
  • Mechanically minded; constant need to identify and modify manufacturing techniques in the lab
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze experimental data, reach conclusions, and communicate results
  • Candidates with extensive industrial experience in glass science are welcomed to apply in lieu of above-mentioned qualifications
  • The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as needed
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Comfortable presenting to a large audience.
  • A safety-first mindset: share potential risks with others before they result in hazardous outcomes
  • A critical thinking mindset and focus on finding answers
  • A desire to challenge yourself and take on increasing responsibilities as the company grows
  • Occasional travel within and outside of Canada
  • Preference for expertise in aqueous environments, dissolution, or corrosion background; alternatively strong background in glass production, processing and manufacturing
  • Preference for knowledge of non-silica based glasses
  • Experience in lapidary sample preparation techniques, including cutting and polishing
  • Familiarity with software tools for data analysis (e.g., MATLAB, Python).
  • Class 5 drivers license is required
