Job summary

Lake Shore Gold is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to join the Bell Creek Mine team in Timmins, ON on a full-time basis. Relocation to the Timmins area is required and the schedule is 4 on, 3 off, 10 hours per day.

The role collaborates with Engineering and Operations to ensure ground stability with minimal dilution and ground failure. Responsibilities include inspections, seismic monitoring, modeling, and documentation updates across GCMP, SRMP, and BMP.

Qualifications

  • Must be a fully qualified Professional Mining or Geological Engineer in good standing with at least 2 years of underground experience.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and strong computer skills using Deswik and Map3D.
  • Experience implementing seismic monitoring systems is an asset.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; team-oriented and safety-focused.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine inspections of all underground areas to evaluate geotechnical conditions.
  • Investigate ground falls or hazardous conditions and provide remediation recommendations.
  • Maintain GCMP, SRMP, BMP and related ground support documentation.
  • Operate mine seismic monitoring system, manage data and report hazards.
  • Perform numerical modeling to assess stability and hazards for future designs.
  • Design and install geotechnical instrumentation to monitor stress changes.
  • Collaborate with planning engineers on development and stope extraction plans.
  • Provide input to daily, weekly, monthly and long-term planning processes.
  • Advise on alternative ore extraction methods and sequencing with benefits and risks.
  • Guide ground support, backfill and shotcrete requirements with QA/QC input.

We are looking to hire a Geotechnical Engineer to join our Bell Creek Mine team in Timmins,ON., on a full-time basis. The schedule for this position is 4 on, 3 off, 10hrs/day.

Compensation: This position offers a base salary range of $85,000 -$100,000 annually, based on qualifications and experience. Vacancy Status: This is an existing vacancy. The successful candidate may begin as soon as possible.

Please note that this role requires relocation to the Timmins area and is not a camp-based position.

The role of Geotechnical Engineer will be to work closely with the Engineering and Operational Teams on site to provide and implement sound engineering and rock mechanics principles that will ensure stability of stopes and excavations with minimal dilution and ground failure.

Reporting to the Senior Engineer, the Geotechnical Engineer will have the following responsibilities:

  • Conduct routine inspections of all underground areas to evaluate geotechnical conditions
  • Investigate all incidents of ground falls or hazardous ground conditions and provide operations management with acceptable remediation or rehabilitation requirements
  • Maintain and update geotechnical documentation, including the Ground Control Management Plan(GCMP), Seismic Risk Management Plan (SRMP), Backfill Management Plan (BMP), associated ground support standards, operating procedures, and quality control programs.
  • Operate and maintain the mine microseismic monitoring system, including database management, seismic interpretation, hazard identification, and communication of significant seismic events or instability risks.
  • Complete numerical modeling assessments of existing and future mine designs to assess global geotechnical stability and hazards
  • Design and install geotechnical instrumentation, as required, to monitor stress changes/ground movements
  • Use monitoring data to alert operations and management to potential hazardous conditions and to calibrate geotechnical models
  • Work closely with the planning engineers to review and approve all development and stope extraction plans
  • Provide input to the daily, weekly, monthly and long-term planning processes
  • In consultation with the Engineering and Operational Teams, plan alternative methods of ore extraction, stope access and mining sequence, detailing the benefits and issues with each approach and provide recommendations
  • Work closely with the Engineering and Operational Teams to provide guidance on ground support, backfill and shotcrete requirements; this will include providing technical assistance for the purposes of quality control and quality assurance in these areas
  • Assist with underground mining studies, as necessary
  • Participate actively in training programs, personal improvement, and job improvement initiatives
  • Continually develop the ability, knowledge and skills necessary to keep up with the changing methods and technology in the job
  • Perform other duties as requested

The following will be critical to successfully performing this role:

Must possess accreditation as a fully qualified Professional Mining or Geological Engineer in good standing and a minimum of 2 years of related work experience in an underground environment

Ability to function with minimal supervision

Strong computer skills are required. Excellent skills are required in the use of design programs, such as, Deswik, Map3D and other geotechnical software.

Experience in implementing and maintaining a seismic monitoring system will be considered an asset

Excellent organizational and time management skills are required. The ability to relate to both operations and engineering in a team approach is essential to success and overall, you are a motivated team player who demonstrates compliance with all health and safety regulations.
