Job summary

Vertex Resource Group Ltd. is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to lead field investigations and geotechnical projects across Southwestern Ontario, including Sarnia, London, Chatham-Kent and Windsor–Essex. The role supports a national geotechnical group, reporting to the Director of Geotechnical Engineering.

The position offers a hybrid work model with travel to project sites, opportunities to build a local practice, and collaboration with Vertex’s national team to deliver integrated projects.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. A Master’s degree in geotechnical engineering is considered an asset.
• 5 to 10 years of professional experience in geotechnical engineering, ideally in a consulting environment.
• P.Eng. designation in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), or eligibility to register with PEO promptly.
• Knowledge of Ontario standards and regulatory environment — OPSS/OPSD, MTO requirements, the Ontario Building Code and O. Reg. 406/19 (excess soil) — is a strong asset.
• Experience with geotechnical software such as Slope/W, gINT, PLAXIS, Settle3, LPile and APile, as well as ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Google Earth and Microsoft products.
• Experience with field investigation techniques, including soil logging and supervision of auger, sonic and geotechnical drilling programs.
• Ability to produce clear, defensible technical reports and to explain recommendations to clients, contractors and approval authorities.
• Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, with proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Valid Class G Ontario driver’s licence and willingness to travel to project sites within southwestern Ontario.

Responsibilities

• Plan, coordinate and supervise geotechnical field investigations, including boreholes, SPT, CPT, test pits and instrumentation installation.
• Analyze field and laboratory data to develop soil and rock parameters for design.
• Prepare geotechnical reports and recommendations covering foundations, settlement, slope stability, retaining structures, excavation and dewatering, pavement design and earthworks.
• Provide construction-phase support, including review of submittals, site visits, subgrade and foundation inspections, and resolution of conditions encountered in the field.
• Conduct engineering assessments for slope instability, with strong fundamentals in landslide susceptibility, risk assessment, soil characterization, factor of safety and slip surface analysis.
• Coordinate with drilling contractors and geotechnical laboratories, including scheduling, health and safety, and QA/QC of results.
• Act as the local technical point of contact for clients, project managers and contractors in southwestern Ontario.
• Support proposals, scoping and estimating for geotechnical work in the region.
• Mentor junior engineers, EITs and field technicians.
• Collaborate with Vertex’s environmental, engineering and construction service lines to deliver integrated projects.
• Other duties as directed by your direct supervisor or manager.

Overview

Vertex is currently accepting applications for a Geotechnical Engineer to support our growing practice in southwestern Ontario. Our office and material testing lab are in Sarnia but this is a potentially remote role with London and the surrounding excellent locations for a home-based professional. The successful candidate will lead the technical execution of geotechnical projects across the Sarnia–Lambton, London, Chatham-Kent and Windsor–Essex corridor, backed by Vertex’s national geotechnical group. The candidate will report to the Director of Geotechnical Engineering.

Location

• This is a hybrid role with opportunities to work from home and a material testing lab and office in Sarnia.
• Travel is primarily within southwestern Ontario; overnight travel is occasional rather than routine.

• Expected salary range: $95,000 to $130,000 per year, based on education, experience and professional designation.
