Job summary

Alberta Precision Laboratories is seeking a Genetics Counselor I to join the Genetics & Genomics unit at the University of Alberta Hospital. You will assess familial risk, interpret genetic test results, and discuss management options with patients and families within a supportive, diverse environment.

You will collaborate with molecular genetics, cytogenetics, and newborn screening teams, providing counseling and guidance, while maintaining high ethical standards and patient advocacy.

Qualifications

• Master of Genetic Counseling degree required.
• Board Certification or eligibility with CAGC/ABGC required.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills needed.
• Organizational skills and collaborative teamwork are essential.

Responsibilities

• Determine patient/family risk for genetic conditions and interpret results.
• Explain options and promote informed choice in counseling sessions.
• Support patients and families dealing with medical, psychological, and familial implications.
• Provide guidance on testing options, results interpretation, and newborn screening where applicable.
• Offer advocacy and education to patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
