Qualifications

• PhD in Genetics or related field with CCMG/ABMGG board certification.
• Board-certified in Genetic and Genomic Diagnostics, Cytogenetics, or Molecular Genetics.
• Board-eligible candidates may be considered at appropriate compensation.
• Preference for candidates with 2+ years’ experience and dual molecular/cytogenetics certification.

Responsibilities

• Oversee genetic testing and analysis on patient samples using PCR, sequencing, gene panels, and exomes, and/or cytogenetic analysis.
• Interpret complex genetic data for patient diagnoses.
• Collaborate with clinicians and genetic counsellors to integrate genetic information into care plans.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines and QA standards in the clinical lab.
• Participate in R&D to improve testing methodologies and expand test offerings.
• Teach and mentor medical students, residents, clinical fellows, staff and students; potential university teaching at the University of Alberta.

Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) is seeking a PhD Clinical Lab Scientist with subspecialty certification in Genetic and Genomic Diagnostics or Molecular Genetics, to join our division of Genetics and Genomics. APL is a leader in laboratory medicine providing comprehensive laboratory services at multiple sites across the province of Alberta. The division of Genetics and Genomics provides comprehensive genetic and genomic testing in the areas of molecular diagnostics, constitutional and cancer cytogenetics, biochemical genetics, and newborn screening.

Description:

As a Clinical Laboratory Geneticist, you will be an essential member of our medical and scientific leadership team, responsible for; overseeing genetic testing and analysis on patient samples using various techniques, including PCR, DNA/RNA sequencing, gene panels and exomes, and/or cytogenetic analysis; Interpretation of complex genetic data, including identifying genetic mutations, variants, and chromosomal abnormalities relevant to patient diagnoses; collaboration with other medical specialists and genetic counsellors to integrate genetic information into patient care plans; ensuring compliance with all regulatory guidelines and quality assurance standards in the clinical laboratory; staying updated with the latest advancements in clinical genetics and molecular diagnostics to enhance testing accuracy and efficiency; participating in research and development initiatives to improve genetic testing methodologies and expand test offerings; and teaching and mentoring of medical students, residents, clinical fellows, as well as staff and students within the laboratory and opportunities for classroom-based teaching at the University of Alberta. Opportunities exist for cross-coverage in the genetics laboratories depending on operational needs, as well as the qualifications and interests of the successful candidate. Required Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in Genetics or a related field plus board certification in Genetic and Genomic Diagnostics, Cytogenetics, or Molecular Genetics, by the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists (CCMG), or equivalent certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG). Board eligible candidates may also be considered at the appropriate compensation range. Preference will be given to candidates with a minimum of 2 years’ experience and possessing dual certification in molecular/cytogenetics and those with demonstrated relevant clinical and academic experience.

Additional Required Qualifications:

This position requires excellent analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills with a focus on leadership development. Candidates must be able to demonstrate effective communication skills, experience in quality assurance, operational efficiency, and appropriateness of care.
